KORY ABBOTT MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW IN RE/MAX LEGENDS AT SPEEDWORLD
By Dave Westerman
Orlando Speedworld opened up for its second Saturday program of 2007 with Chamber of Commerce weather making for a great night of racing.
In the RE/MAX Legends, luck of the draw put heat winners Kory Abbott and Jimmy Norman in row three for the start. Outside pole sitter Chelsea Schillig took the initial advantage and built up a quick lead only to see second-running Andy Logan spin on lap two scattering the field. Logan went to the back for the restart as Schillig again built up a quick lead only to see something break a lap later sending her car slowly off into the infield.
Abbott inherited the lead at that point only to see caution fly on lap seven for Rick Wetmore's spin in turn four. Two laps later, Logan found himself in the back stretch wall after tangling with Eric Eichelberger ending Logan's night prematurely.
From that point the race ran the rest of the way under green as Abbott sped off to his second win in as many races this year. Brandon Thomson, driving Andy Logan's other car, came home second ahead of Jimmy Norman, James Rodriguez and Mike Verhaagh. Rounding out the top ten were Shaughn McCormick, David Tart, Wild Willie Wilson, Rick Wetmore and Eric Eichelberger.
Alex Kempf snared his first ever win in the Legend Car Charger division as he took the lead from Gerald White, Jr. on lap six and led the rest of the way. The race took a big turn on lap nine when White spun off turn four while running second and was collected by the cars of heat winner Randy Garven, Bryan Beland and Dean Moslow, Jr. Only Moslow was able to continue.
In all, just three cars finished the race out of the nine scheduled to start. Kempf took the win with Moslow taking second after Dallas Ingram spun out of that position on the final lap. White was credited with fourth ahead of Garven, Beland and Mark Bibeau. Brent Tyler and Charlie O'Melia did not start.
Ron Gustafson led the first two laps of the Classic Car feature but it was Ricky Wood blasting his way from his last place starting spot to take the advantage as he drove off to a relatively easy win. Wood, who took over the car from it's owner and regular driver Simeon Spagnoulo after the heat race crossed the stripe ahead of another substitute driver, David Nunes, who was filling in for Doug Johnson. Heat race winner Ron Gustafson was third ahead of Derrick Wood, Jim Rahman and Andrew Gustafson.
The Hearndon Construction Bandeleros saw a good field of Bandits put on quite a show. When race leaders Shawn Hooven and Critter Saile tangled on the front stretch with four laps to go, first year driver Zoey Guignardi took over the lead and never looked back as she scored her intial feature win after also winning the heat race.
Coty Bibeau scored his best career finish as he took the checker in second while Saile raced back through the field for third ahead of Zach Harris, Tyler Rahman, Justin Bechtold, Daniel Conlin and Hooven.
Mark Hooven scored an easy win in the Young Guns for his second win of the year. Gerald Cambell took second and Donovan Ponder was third.
Action in the ABC Towing Hurricanes was dominated by the A-1 Shed Transport team of Rob Reynolds and Steve Anderson as they drove away from the field to finish one-two. Brian Townson took third in front of Miguel Barrenchea and Mark Walls while Gary Thomas, Brian Cosier, Ray Hindman, Tom Stewart and Richard Barrenchea completed the top ten.
Despite a slowing car, Austin Carr held on for the Junior Stock win taking the checker over Jason Rosarius, Cory Gowin and Travis Carr.
