It was a beautiful night for racing as the Bronson Motor Speedway welcomed the Southern Sportsman Series and the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series to the fabled high banks. In addition, the Open Wheel Lites and the Fascar Quick Kids Trucks were in action along with some local flavor in the Super Stocks and Thunder Stock divisions. There certainly was racing for all types of race fans on this Saturday Night!
Qualifying began promptly at 6:30 with the Southern Sportsman Series performing act one. Twenty Seven of the most talented drivers in the state attacked the track in search of the top lap time. Richard Elkins Jr. set the pace followed closely by Craig Cuzzone and local racer Arthur Conquest. The fast qualifier would pull the 3 pill for inversion. The FMSC had fifteen cars in their tussle for the top of the heap in qualifying. Fast time would go to hot shoe Richard Kelley who eventually drew the five pill for the inversion on the start.
After the heat races the Southern Sportsman Series kicked off the Features with 50 Laps of heart pounding action. Arthur Conquest found himself on the front row after the draw and took full advantage of it. Leaving the field to "duke" it out behind him, Conquest led all 50 Laps. Although the leader was seldom challenged, there was tons of racing throughout the field. At the end Conquest was followed by Elkins and Steve Gainey took third. A hats off goes to another local in the race as Scott Wilkerson piloted his car to a fifth place run.
In FMSC action, fast qualifier Richard Kelley would use a miscue by the leaders to pass coming off turn four the cruise to an easy win. Robbie Storer, "Mr. Bronson" in the past, would be forced to settle for second in the 50 lap main event for the four cylinder wonders.
Bronson Fans were witnesses to a little bit of history Saturday Night as Randy Anderson, son of Late Model star Wayne Anderson and grandson of legendary Dick Anderson, would pick up the first win of his career in the Quick Kids Feature. The Quick Kids Series is a development series for the FASCAR Pro Trucks Divisions.
As the Open Wheel Lites took center stage the theme was set for leader mistakes to select the winner. ON lap 15 of the feature, the leaders spun off of turn four and the # 04 or Rick Lundeen cruised home for the win.
In local Bronson Action, James "Doc" Batson and Donnie Roberts staged a classic battle for the top honors in the Super Stock Division. Batson was able to pull off a pass on the outside groove to take the top honors. After the race both drivers admitted to having a blast racing side by side for the win. Bobby Taylor continued his winning ways in the Thunder Stock Class. Taylor traveled up from Crystal River to race and it paid off. He held off a hard challenge by Brent Cooper in the late laps to take the win.
