David Wilson Takes First Win, Choquette Secures Championship
By Rick Anges
Bradenton, Fl. Jeff Choquette looked like he would walk away with the ’07 Hoosier Cup All American Challenge Series when the season started. Although he finished eleventh in the opening “Leroy Porter Icebreaker 125” his win in race number two set the pace a wild points race. He won three out of the next five races placing second twice to Jeff Sloan and Jeff Scofield.
Just when it looked like he would score the first hat trick winning three in a row his luck would change.
Choquette was walking away from the field when he got tangled up with the lapped car of Robert Yoho slamming him into the wall and destroying his hot rod. “Losing that car was like loosing a best friend,” Choquette said later in the year.
Chris Fontaine meanwhile had stayed right in the hunt with good finishes behind the point’s leader. On the night Choquette crashed Fontaine took the win and moved into the top spot. As the season wound down Choquette found his once again and win the first race in November to move back on top. Choquette lived up to the nickname “The Gunslinger” as he not only got fast time but blistered around the High-Banks with the fastest lap of the year with a 14.379.
“The Rocket Man” Wayne Jefferson would take advantage of the roll of the die jumping into the top spot on the drop of the green. Jefferson had a dominating car in the early stages of the race but he would eventually feel the heat from David Wilson. Wilson who moved up from the Truck ranks and also made a stab at the Hooters Pro Cup burst upon the Super Late Model scene with impressive runs against some of the top names in the game.
Several yellows would bunch the field but after several laps Wilson would be challenging for the lead.
Late in the race Wilson made a move on the outside of Jefferson getting on the outside of the 94. They made contact sending Jefferson slamming into the front stretch wall ending his night. The call on the track was the Wilson had the position before the contact and retained his spot. Choquette made several runs in the late laps but Wilson would not be denied as would take his first ever Super Late Model win. “ I have to thank Dicky Anderson and Junior Purcell for helping me all season, we are going fishing!” exclaimed a jubilant Wilson.
Choquette nailed down the championship with his second place run. “ We finished second to Scofield at Governors Cup and the Sunbelt Series Championship, to come down here and win the championship really feels great.” He said after the race.
Chris Fontaine impressed everyone coming from just over a half a lap down to finish in the third spot, fourth across the stripe was Richie Anderson and fifth Scot Walters.
