Sportsman and Thunder Stock Double Features Highlight Citrus Race Card
by Larry MacMillan
The Racing schedule is winding down but the chases for the Championships in all divisions are heating up at Citrus County Speedway. Saturday night brought out 106 racers in perfect weather for five divisions to show their stuff.
The spotlight was on the Limited Sportsman and Thunder Stocks kicking off the night with make up features from previously rained out races plus a full race card for the Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers in heat and feature action.
Limited Sportsmen took the first green flag with 14 of the original 21 race cars making the return trip for the make up race from the August 26th rainout. Maloy Kelly moved to the pole position and set the pace from the get go to the checkered flag for his second feature win of the year.
Outside pole sitter Chris Cross see sawed from second to third and back to second when it counted chasing Kelly across the line followed by 10th starter Tom Posavec, 7th starter Jim Altobelli who continues to lead the points race in the division. Rounding out the top five was Ernie Reed.
Twenty one cars made the heats and 2nd feature with Craig Robinson shinning after experiencing a horrendous fire last week in the Southern Sportsman Series race. He was definitely flying Saturday night and logged his second feature win of the season after locking in his heat race. Ernie Reed moved from 7th to second at the line followed by 18th starter Chris Cross. Second heat winner Tom Posavec worked his way from 17th to finish fourth just ahead of Steve Olone who won the second heat.
Twenty four Thunder Stocks were kept busy with a pair of feature races and three heat races that saw quite a few minor wrecks. In the September 16th make up feature Mike Dubbs moved through traffic from his eighth starting spot to take his first win of the season over 12th starter Megan Spicer.
Tim Wilson moved from 17th to third in a nose to tail finish with Megan Spicer and Megans dad Randy just behind him when the checkers dropped. Pole sitter Louie Cioe held out for a fifth place finish. Heat winners were Coie, Megan Spicer and Carmine Castoria. In race number 2, 2005 Champion Steve Stinedurf worked his way from 6th to the point and held on for his first win of the season.
A late arrival and first timer at Citrus James, Erickson came from 26th to put a late charge on Stinedurf but had to settle for second. The finish brought on some controversy when apparent 3rd place finisher Ted Taylor failed to go to tech for post race inspection and was D.Q.d giving the spot to another late charger Tim Wilson. Rick Shahid moved from 11th to fourth over Kristine Henick. Heat wins went to Louie Cioe, Rick Shahid and Jim Kruse.
Wayne Anderson again proved to be King of The Road over a 16 car Late Model field, launching from his outside pole slot to the point when the green flew in the drag race with pole sitter Scott Grossenbacher.
Anderson logged his 4th win of the season in a wire to wire run with Grossenbacher in hot pursuit. Herb Hoefler won out in the multi lap battle with Gary Grubbs in the run for third while Daniel Webster moved from his 9th starting spot to finish fifth.
Grubbs and Anderson took the heat wins. Late Models will run back to back Twin 50s for points on Saturday October 21st when the drivers will play trick or treat with the kids for an early Halloween celebration.
Twenty Mini stocks saw Don Faunce jump to the front in their 20 lap main with some heavy hitters in hot pursuit. Johnathon Camp moved towards the front early in the race but saved the best for last in a super match race with Jason Rendell who made several runs at the leader to no avail.
George Neumann moved through traffic from his 17th starting spot to a solid third place finish to hold his points lead in the division over Camp who is definitely making noise right behind him. Phillip Joyner started 11th and finished fourth over Joe Irwin who made his first appearance at Citrus and started 18th. Heat wins went to Todd Haught, Clint Foley and George Neumann
Twenty one Bombers made the starting field for their 20 lap main event with James Williams taking the early lead off the pole followed by Jeramy Root. Meanwhile Joey Durbin made his way to the front from his 20th starting spot before he lost a tire going for the lead on turn one. This moved 18th starter Chris Allen to the point and Jeramy Root spent the rest of the race chasing him to the checkers.
Allen celebrated his first win of the season. Newcomer Brett Jenkins locked down third from his 19th starting spot followed by James Williams and James Pate. Heat winners were Neal Durbin, Mathew Cummins and Jon Doucette.
Next Saturday will feature the Gulf Coast Modified traveling series in a 50 lapper plus the limited Sportsmen, Mini Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers. Tickets are on sale at the Speedway for the Annual Awards Banquet set for Friday, December 15th at the Citrus County Auditorium.
