Jarrett tops Mini Stock 50, Bruns tops Mods again at Orlando SpeedWorld
The rains stayed clear of Orlando Speedworld Friday Evening as the "local" Mini Stock drivers took the spotlight for a 50 lap feature just two weeks after the Florida Mini Stock Challenge was in town.
Kelly Jarrett, one of the few regular weekly competitors to race with the FMSC in their race, seemed to have used that race as as a good tune-up for this week as he drove his Toyota to quick time of 15.545 seconds to earn the pole for the half-century grind.
Jarrett would set the pace the entire distance with just token opposition. Only three cautions for minor spins slowed the pace although during one of those periods Heather Suggs drove her car to the infield with a fire underneath that was quickly extinguished. Jarrett took his third win of the year with relative ease over Josh Hermann, Michael Seay, Dick Laszlo and Bob Kelchner.
The four cars behind Jarrett put on a whale of a show during the race though, swapping spots nearly every lap. Randy Blakeslee came back from a late race spin to take sixth with Wayne Clark, Tommy Morrison, John Cook, Suggs and Brian Meek rounding out the finishers.
Patrick Conrad dominated the heat race for the Super Late Models and led the opening 11 laps of the 25 lap feature before his car started to go away on him and Dusty Cornelius claimed the top spot for two laps before he spun out during lap 15.
Chad Pierce inherited the lead at that point and went on to claim his second straight feature win over Conrad, Mario Hernandez, Gary Bierlein, Cornelius and Shawn Gourley.
It was another Alan Bruns show in the Modifieds as he dominated the 15 lapper once again for his sixth win of 2006. The Modified feature got off to a rocky start as Shain Held got loose with Skip Honaker driving over his car and ending up against the turn one wall. Both were out before the race actually began. Terri Bryant was also involved but was able to continue.
Bruns led from green to checker after starting on the outside pole to take the win over heat winner Dave Debelius, Mark Emberson, Kurt Jett, and Bryant. Rounding out the top ten were Randy Froelich, Norm Woodring, Butch Herdegen, Held and Honaker.
The Sportsman feature saw quite a bit of wild action starting on the opening lap when heat winner Travis Towell and Timmy Todd, Jr. tangled with Todd hard into the turn one wall. Towell continued only to have his car get loose in turn two a few laps later with Richard Hight colliding with him before going hard into the back stretch wall with a sickening thud. Hight's car caught fire as well but he emerged with only some minor cuts and bruises. Again Towell was able to continue despite quite a bit of front end cosmetic damage.
Bryan Silas was well in command of the feature but had a wheel bearing fail with just three laps to go. That handed the lead and eventual win to John Hodge, his first of the year. Finishing behind Hodge's McKinney Construction Special were Towell, Rip Dyal, Silas, Hight, Todd and Billy Cuddy.
After having problems with his car and borrowing Robert Remus' Strictly Stock to run his heat race, Bobby Riley started from the pole and ran off from the Super Stock field. Bomber Bill Loomis topped the second heat and finished second in the main event ahead of first heat winner Johnny Brown, Vince Keeler and Lee Wagner. Completing the top ten were James Frisbie, Jason Foster, Tobi Smith, Scott Keena and Michael Poole.
After a year of near misses, Richard Barrenchea finally found victory lane in the Strictly Stock feature holding off Bob Snyder, Robert Remus, Brian Lynch, Jr., and Steven Streight. Gary Thomas, Matt Sprenkel, George Brown, Miguel Barrenchea and Joey White rounded out the top ten. Lynch and Dave Czerwinski won the heats.
For the second week in a row, the brother act of Zachary and Justin Curtis took the Junior Stock wins. Zachary won the 8-11 year old feature over Jeff Cuddy, Luke Gaier and Wes Railing, Jr. while Justin topped the 12-15 year old class ahead of Alex Fortune, Shane Sutorus and Jessie Cuddy.
