Cornelius in Super Lates, Bruns in Modifieds at SpeedWorld
Track crews worked hard all week and had the racing surface in great shape after last weeks Crash-A-Rama as Orlando Speedworld was back in Action with all FASCAR racing divisions on a sweltering Friday evening.
The Super Late Models got off to a rough start in their heat race as the cars of Chris Staggs and Rick Bates crashed hard on the front stretch. Barry Willoughby took the heat but it was young Dusty Cornelius who "dusted" the veterans in the 25 lap feature, leading all the way for his second career SLM win.
Former track champ Ricky Wood made his first start of 2006 and came home a distant second ahead of Willoughby and Gary Bierlein, who was driving a new machine recently purchased from Brian Finney. Surprisingly, both Bates and Staggs were able to get back out for the feature and wound up fifth and sixth ahead of Mark Miller and Russ Shaw.
Alan Bruns didn't make any friends in the Modified feature but he still found himself in victory lane after a crazy race. Shain Held looked to have his second straight win in the bag until he blew his engine on lap seven, just as Bruns and Mark Emberson were tangling in turn one. Bruns had already gotten together with Andy Saffioti earlier putting Saffioti nearly a lap down.
After the caution for Held's demise, Bruns got back around Emberson cleanly on lap 11 and led the rest of the way for his third win of the year over Emberson, Randy Froelich, Saffioti and Held. Bruns also won the heat.
Thirteen cars started the Super Stock feature but after three red flags and plenty of slam-bang action, only five cars were running as the checker fell.
Newlywed Mike Gennett got things started by slamming the fourth turn wall on lap four. Gennett's car was totaled but fortunately he climbed out OK. Lap ten saw Johnny Brown hard into the front stretch wall after tangling with Bobby Simcox. Again, the driver was OK but Brown's car was done for the night.
On the restart, second-running Jason Foster broke an axle going into turn four and collected third place Ron Whaley in the process with both racers forced from the action.
James Frisbie grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and was never headed throughout the race. Bobby Byars came home second ahead of Simcox, Matt Jarrett and Michael Poole as they were the only ones to finish. Heat wins went to Frisbie and Byars.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail led all the way to win the Mini Stock feature holding off R.J. Arnone, heat race winner Dick Laszlo, Michael Seay and Randy Blakeslee.
Andy Nicholls did likewise in the Sportsman class taking a green to checker victory over Bryan Silas, Travis Towell, Richard Hight, Eddie Thornton and John Hodge. Nicholls also won the heat.
Apparent Strictly Stock winner Randy Poole was disqualified after the checker flew giving the win to Robert Remus, his third of the year. Trailing Remus were Richard Barrenchea, Tim "Copperhead" Gibson, David Lasky and Steven Streight.
Wes Railing, Jr. drove his new Honda CRX to the win in the Junior Stock 8-11 year old division finishing ahead of heat race winner Zachary Curtis' new Saturn, Jeff Cuddy, Luke Gaier and Luke Burke. Justin Curtis was a first time winner in the Junior Stock 12-15 year old class taking the win over B.J. Heffler, Jessie Cuddy and heat winner Kaisee Crites.
