Citrus County Speedway Hosts Fantastic Night Of FAST Racing
by Bill Green
Veteran Wayne Anderson gets a run on 14 year old Dustin Dunn in the FAST Late Model race Staurday night.
FAST Motorsports Group had 55 racing entries show up for the Citrus County Speedway event. Wayne Anderson showed the youngsters that CCS is a tricky little track, but he can dial in anything and win. After just receiving his Fast Late Model create motor on Tuesday of the previous week, he drops it in the familiar #84 Air Frame Int’l Flyer and holds a driving clinic for some of the young guns of the division.
Coming into all the hype of “Big Daddy” Dave Pletcher VS “The New” Wayne Anderson, you would have thought that the two old veterans had the edge in experience and? shaving. But, as qualifying set the field with veterran Anderson’s 14.300 second to the “Lead-Foot” Sean Bass‘s 14.239 in his Reliable A/C #20. At this point you started to get the feeling that it might be a tough roe to how for the older dynamic duo. Third quick would see the best of the young guns so far in 2006, Cody Pitts bring the Tampa Autoway Chevy in at 14.406. He was followed by another 14 year old, Spencer Taylor at 14.488 in the Advance Auto Parts #46. Steve Smith went fifth quick in his #28 Smith Drywall special, at 14.576 .
The starting grid would be set when Bass pulled the 8-pill. That put the #3 of first time FAST Late Model pilot Dustin Dunn in the cat-bird seat on the pole. Dustin ran FAST Kids our last time out at Orlando, so his leap to FAST Late Models had a few folks second guessing the move, but Dustin eased their minds with Dunn-style driving and persistence that showed just how improved this young racer is after just a few years on the FAST circuit.
Early action had a very fast Wayne Anderson pulling in behind Dunn in the early laps and putting a clean inside move on the youngster. Dunn flexed his knowledge of racing and with a little quick handed car control, push back at Anderson in the next corner. Anderson went up the hill enough for the kid to get underneath and the crowd held its breath.
Three years ago, Wayne Anderson would have handled things much differently, but on this night he showed the enlightenment of his years. Knowing that young Dunn was only 15 years of age and in his first ever Late Model event, Wayne was patient with him.
Allowing Dunn to settle down from his bold move and gather his thoughts. As the #84 rolled back up on the rear bumper of Dunn, the fans held their breath. Level heads prevailed, as Dustin slid up just enough to give Anderson another run and allowed the veteran to pass unchallenged.
Another young gun making a name for himself in Florida racing is Dalton Zehr in the #119. An 8th place finish at the Five Flags ASA National event the night before was credit to his ability.
It took Anderson only 4 laps to reel in the leading Zehr and only 2 more to make the inside move off turn two. Zehr gave room and got a friendly salute from the drivers window of the #84 after the pass. Anderson cruised to the win, after several cautions and restarts. Followed by Zehr in second.
Third went to Dustin Dunn, with Spencer Taylor fourth and Brock Burns fifth.
Fast Kids look a little rough around the edges in the “Q“ Auto & Injuries Attorneys event. Getting only 24 of the scheduled 35 laps in the allotted 35 minute time limit.
The winner of the caution happy outing would be Anthony Campi in a new truck to him, Bontragger’s old #8 Budweiser machine.
He was followed by the #08 of Miami’s Drew Brannon second. Third went to the consistent, John Kidwell, while Cody Benoit survived for the forth spot, ahead of the #96 of Austin Howell.
FasTruck Pros saw Travis Roland finish first in the 75-lap Triple “H.” T. Auto Care Feature , with J. R. Garcia III taking second. Third would go to James Wright III. Fourth across the strip would be Andy Magronigle, out lasting Travis Hanson who settled for Fifth.
Next outing for the Fast Motorsports Group will be May 27th as the series returns to Charlotte County Speedway. For more information on FMG and it’s race divisions, call 813-817-RACE (7223).
