Dean, DuBose split Sportsman twin 25s; But Four Cyclinders Stole the Show
By Claude Lewis
Dale Dean III had the fastest Sportsman car Saturday night at Charlotte County Speedway, as he grabbed a victory and a second place finish in twin 25 lappers.
Deans blue 19 rocket simply blew away the field in the second 25 lapper. The Fort Myers hotshoe challenged for the lead in the first 25-lapper, but he got tangled up and shuffled back while making his move on lap 15. He battled back for his second place finish.
Arcadias James DuBose captured the first race and he finished third in the second race. He was borrowing a car from buddy Ricky Bullard Jr. since his own car was still down after a wreck at CCS three weeks ago.
DuBose came into the night second in Sportsman points behind Roger Smith.
Arcadias Shaver brothers also had good nights. George was third in the first 25-lapper while Joe was second in the second 25-lapper.
Old time CCS crowd favorite Joe Sumasky returned to the paved oval Saturday night, as he drove the 91 car usually piloted by Ander Jackson.
Smokin Joe led the first 15 laps of race No. 1 before getting caught up with Dean and finishing sixth. He was fifth in the second race.
Out of control is the only way to describe the Junkyard Dogs 25-lap feature, as three drivers relegated the race to a circle track circus.
It began when Randy Kile was late getting out on the track for the feature. He caught up to the pack just as the green flag was waving. He plowed the 21 past a number of cars at the start. Jumping the start is a non-no. Kile, who started the night second in points, was penalized nine positions.
Kyle Smith, the points leader, also had his problems in the 51 car. He was into the wall on lap 9. Later, he was repeatedly rammed by the 14 car driven by John Connolly on the front straightaway ala demolition derby.
Connolly happens to be the brother of Kile.
All three were qualified and face further disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, the 23 car of Dustin Paladino and the 00 of Chris Lucas put on quite a show battling for the lead. Paladino ended up taking the checkered. Josh Calvert was third.
There were still hostilities at the end of the race as Cory Tinsley used his 64 car to ram Calvert.
There were three other regular divisions racing Saturday night at CCS.
In Road Warriors, Shane Leonard busted past Travis Amboyan to the front and was strong in the 18 car. Amboyan raced the 40 car hard for second.
Donnie Ollie Jr. edged Dar Houghtaling at the stripe for third.
In Thunder Trucks, Don Van Acker had a productive night in Mike Bialeckis 8 truck. Van Acker survived an early block by Jeff Thurman in the No. 5 and went on to win by a comfortable margin. Wally Smith was second in James Wrights 6 truck. Bullet Bob Charette took third in the 56 truck.
The Super Stock feature went to Brian Richardson in the 56 car. Eric Smith was second in the 10 car, while Jerry Adkins was third in the 14.
Tim McGuire of Punta Gorda captured the Flag Pole race.
This coming Saturday will be highlighted by Figure 8 racing. Both the Outlaws and School Buses will take to the Punta Gorda 3/8-mile paved oval.
