Two races into the 2006 Outlaw Modified season is way too early to rule out anyone. But one thing seems for certain. Defending champion Raymond Superfrog Jones wont be the series points champ this year.
Jones, who has won two of the last three Outlaw Modified titles, blew up before Saturday nights race at Charlotte County Speedway and said he would be selling his car.
Jones, who hails from Arcadia, also blew a motor before the Outlaw Modified season opener at DeSoto two weeks ago.
Robbie Bean has been the man in charge so far. He won Saturdays 30-lap feature at CCS. He was second at DeSoto. That puts the Miami area hotshoe atop the points heap.
Cliffy Steinman was second at Punta Gorda Saturday night. Veteran Bobby Dayton was third, finishing just a nose ahead of hard-charging El Jobeaner Mike Endee in the 29 car.
Endee was penalized a spot for jumping a restart and he had to settle for fifth behind Robert Campbell. Endee worked his way from the back to contend.
The Sportsman division ran its first 50-lap feature of the season. Defending champ James DuBose was conspicuously missing from the field.
Bubba Thompson was set to start from the pole, but his 75 car starting missing right before the green and he pulled into the pits. In the first turn of lap 1, the 20 car of Kevin Brickley and the 1 of Ricky Bullard Jr. got into a tangle. Brickley got the worst of it as the 20 car was done for the night.
Bullard grabbed the lead on the restart, but the front toe of his car was bent and he couldnt stay up front.
Danny Yates of Cape Coral charged to the front in the 22 car. He held off a brief challenge from the 19 of Dale Dean III and held on to the checkered. Joe Shaver of Arcadia was third. Bullard was fourth.
Another Bullard was victorious, as Rickys little brother, Jason, won the 8-lap Flag Pole race.
In the Super Stock 25-lapper, Charles Parsons steered his 15 car to victory lane ahead of defending division champion Chris Grubb. Eric Smith was third.
The Road Warrior 25-lap feature was a Waltz on the asphalt. Bob Waltz Sr. took checkers in the 5 car. His son Bob 8 Ball Jr. was third. Sandwiched in between was the 22 car of Anne Marie Ricardi.
In Thunder Trucks, last weeks winner Don Van Acker was T-boned and Bill Atkins went on to win in the 5 truck. Richard Dupont was second in the Mopar 08. Bob Charette grabbed another third place trophy for his collection.
In the Junkyard Dog 4-cylinder wars, Kyle Smith won with Randy Kyle second and Dustin Paladino third.
