Bradenton, Fl. A near capacity crowd came out on a hot humid night for some first class racing action at the “High Banks” of DeSoto Super Speedway. They were not let down as the pits were packed with some of the best competitors from around the state and they did not let the crowd down, as the racing was top notch the whole night.
Q Auto and Injury Atty's OWM Thirty-one cars signed in for the 50 lap Q Auto and Injury Atty.’s Open Wheel Modified Series race. The drivers were told in the drivers meeting that all 31 cars would take to the track for the feature event.
Series points leader Timmy Moore lead the field in qualifying followed by Robby McAuliffe, Doug Moff, Bobby Baldwin and Pat Nanney. The points chase is a close one as Moore leads by just a scant 5 points over second place Wayne “the Rocketman” Jefferson going into the nights race.
The field was inverted five rows by the roll of the die putting “Racin” Mason Love and Mike Hingardner on the front row. When the green dropped it was Hingardner who jumped out to the early lead. Jefferson had a tough night from the get go as on the first lap he bounced off the backstretch wall in a cloud of concrete dust but gathered the car up and continued on.
Hinegardner had a good run going in the 1X machine and had built up a straightaway lead over Love and the rest of the field but a caution came out bunching the field. On the restart Billy “the Kid” Mowery made the move on Love getting by for the second spot setting his sites on the leader. It wasn’t long before Mowery was on Hingardner and took his machine to the front and the lead. Jefferson meanwhile had his hands full with Love trying both the high and low lines trying to get around for the second spot. Contact was made several times between the duo but eventually the Rocketman was able to get by and move into second. During the battle behind him Mowery had built a good lead and looked like he was going to cruise to the win when another yellow came out lining up the field behind him for the restart. Jefferson was right on the back bumper of the leader and looked like he sized him up for the move for the lead when another caution came out slowing the field again. As the cars paced around the track as clean was going on Jefferson suddenly darted into the pits with a tire going down. Jefferson was able to make it out before the green dropped but only could come back with an 11th place finish. With Jefferson gone Mowery cruised to the win, Pat Nanney had an awesome run for second, third went to Mason Love, fourth was Timmy Moore and rounding out the top five was Robby McAuliffe.
Southern Sportsman Series Travis Nichols lead the Southern Sportsman Series 33 car field in qualifying but it was points leader and last years champion Aaron Williamson who was the class of the field as lead from the drop of the green in 50 lap action packed event. Williamson cruised to the victory padding his points lead, second was Travis Nichols, third was Patrick Thomas who came from near the back of the field to take the spot, fourth went to Kyle Tenbusch and Derrick Heath came from 12th spot to finish in fifth.
Pyramid Employers Pure Stocks John Brown jumped out to the early lead in the 25-lap feature event. Brown was the car to beat but in the late stages of the race it was it was Darrin “Dogwood” Ellis who roared to the front sticking the big Monte Carlo on the outside groove and was not to be denied as took his first win of the season. Brown ended up second, third was Ken Smith, fourth went to Roy Wilshire and in fifth Tim Hutton.
Sleep Inn Suites Bombers The Bomber class again had the most exciting race of the night as 23-car field had the fans on their feet all night long. Going 3 and 4 wide and swapping paint sheet metal all race long. “Pistol” Pete Barr took the lead with only a few laps to go looking for his first ever win. When the white flag flew Barr saw his lead diminish and the field closed in as they headed into turn 3. It was a mad dash coming out of turn four with the top 3 cars making contact sending them wildly to the start/finish line. When they got to the line it looked like a dead heat at the checkers. It was a photo finish at the line with Barr taking the win by a half bumper length over Jay King to wild applause from the fans. “I think they need to check that bumper in tech,” said a smiling Jay King. Third went to Dave Davis, fourth across the stripe was Chester Lusk and in the fifth spot Jerome “Sideways” Watland.
Outlaw Modifieds Bringing 18 cars to Desoto Speedway, The Outlaw Modifieds "Florida's fastest four cylinders" Racing Series waited out the big boy's to put on a great Fathers Day Race. Phillip Brigham of Ft Pierce wanted to give his Dad a Fathers Day Gift he would not forget. Pulling out his second win of the season Phillip did just that. Driving the seven car like he stole it, Brigham started on the outside pole and quickly took the lead. Running caution free for an amazing 25 laps of green flag racing with an average lap time of 15.4 seconds, the Outlaws proved again you don't have to spend a lot of money to go fast. Cliff Steinman of the Brandanna 23 car out of Ft Myers, was the only car to make a bid for the lead but he had taken all the Hoo from his Hoosiers getting to the front from mid pack. Robert Campbell driving the Open MRI 10 car of Dr. Seigfreid Holtz took third. Nephew Billy Campbell of Holiday Fl, in the 11 car finished fourth. Mike Bean of Miami finished the top five in the 12 car.
