DeSoto Hosts Huge Night of Racing Action
|
By Rick Anges
Bradenton, Fl. Mother Nature may have won the battle this past Saturday night 6/7, but DeSoto Super Speedway is coming back with a bang! Race fans will be treated to close to 400 laps of racing action this Saturday night.
The “Hoosier Cup” All American Challenge Series will be back in action for their 125-lap feature event in race #6 of the series. Race #5 saw the return of “Big Daddy” Dave Pletcher the 2003 champion. Pletcher was able to bring his ride home in the 6th spot. Wayne Anderson who is running in his first full season with AACS leads the points in the series but right on his heels are Mike Bresnahan and 04 champ Jeff Scofield.
Scofield won his second race in a row for high-powered super late models. His last win did not come without controversy as he and Chris Fontaine got together late in the race with Fontaine leading. On track officials had deemed that Fontaine had cut down on Scofield sending the driver of the #47 machine around in a cloud of tire smoke. Fontaine was sent to the rear of the field much to the displeasure of the crowd. Fontaine made his statement as he pulled in front of the flag stand with a huge pair of glasses hanging out the driver’s side window. The saga continues this Saturday night.
Perhaps the biggest story of the night will be one “Rocketman” Wayne Jefferson. Jefferson recently took over the driving chores in the 94 Super Late Model machine formerly wheeled by “the Big Fish” Chris Turner. Jefferson will be racing in his third race of the young AACS season. Jefferson will also be competing in the “Q” Auto and Injury Attorneys Open Wheel Modifieds “twin 75 lap” features. Jefferson will be attempting to run 275 laps around the tough “High Banks” of DeSoto Super Speedway on what is expected to be a “Hot” June night………Get the water bottles ready boys!
The Open Wheel points race is a tight affair with Timmy Moore leading Jefferson by just 5 points going into the 150 laps of racing coming up. Drivers and crews will have their hands full for these action packed events.
Also on tap at the “South’s Fastest Short Track” is the Mini-Stock 50 lap shoot out. This race usually brings some of the top mini drivers from around the state. Todd Freed Jr. who won the ’04 points championship who recently moved up to the Street Stock ranks will be one of the favorites for this one, but with Jessie Dutilly doing the wrenching on his machine don’t count out Dean Butrum in what should be a grinder right down to the end.
Other events on the schedule for this night full of racing action are the “Sleep Inn Suites” Bombers. This class has thrilled the fans each and every weekend. Going 3 and 4 wide, swapping sheet metal and close finishes has kept the crowd on their feet. DeSoto Trucks, Kids Trucks, Cowboy Caddies and the Mod-Minis make up the rest of the nights racing action.
Also stay tuned the negotiations are still ongoing for the July 2nd FASCAR-FASTRUCK show down at the high banks of DeSoto Super Speedway. Stay Tuned!
