Scofield Battles to Win in AACS Race #4
|
By Rick Anges
Bradenton,Fl. With the majority field of 23 Super Late Models in the mid to high 14 second range in qualifying it was easy to tell that race #4 of the Hoosier Cup All American Challenge Series was not going to be an easy victory for anyone.
The top two drivers in qualfiying were also the top two in the point’s race. Wayne Anderson took fast time over ’04 champ Jeff Scofield.
The field was inverted 5 rows putting Shane Sawyer and B.J.McLeod on the front row. Sawyer took the early lead as McLeod who had problems early in the day fell back to the fifth spot. McLeod fell out of the race before the halfway point finishing 16th on the grid.
As Sawyer led without much challenge in the early stages of the race the competition was really heating up behind the leader.
Scofield was thrashing his way through the pack from his 10th starting spot. The ’04 champion was able to put his ride wherever he wanted on the racetrack. Each pass was an adventure in its own right, as the drivers in front of Scofield did not yield their spots easily.
All eyes were on the battle for the second spot as Scofield had caught Chris Fontaine the right side sheet metal came loose and began flapping in the over 100 mph breeze. “I didn’t want to take a chance on passing on the outside and cutting a tire down,” said Scofield.
Scofield saw his chance on a restart going low and taking the second spot. Fontaine was later black flagged for unsportsman like conduct and sent packing to the pits.
In the late stages of the race Scofield was able to go under Sawyer out of two to take the lead. That’s when the fireworks began going off. Steve Dorer attempted a pass on James Glover with the two making contact. The 10 car of Dorer ended up on the roof of Glover nearly going over before the two came to an abrupt stop on the turn one wall.
Wayne Anderson also had a brilliant run going until early race leader Shane Sawyer lost his brakes in the first turn making contact with Anderson as the two were racing for the second spot. The crash ended Sawyers run and left Anderson with front-end damage that would cause him to leave the race with two laps to go. Anderson would finish tenth on the night.
When the smoke cleared and the checkers flew it was Jeff Scofield taking the win. In his best finish to date the 2004 AACS Rookie of the Year Richie Anderson came across second. Scot Walters had a solid run for third. And in a wild race for fourth it was Mike Bresnahan edging out Robert Yoho.
*note: The “Rocketman” Wayne Jefferson made his AACS Debut in the 94 car. “We still have some work to do on the car but when we get it right watch out,” said Jefferson after the race. Jefferson finished 8th in his first run.
