Roach takes SLM win, Woodley in Super Stocks at SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
There was plenty of racing action Friday night at Orlando Speedworld with several new faces in victory lane, including one for the first time ever.
Orlando's Ronnie Roach powered to the front and led every lap of the Super Late Model feature for his first win of 2005 in his Pit Row Sports Bar sponsored machine.
On the opening lap, Greg Bruce, Jr. got loose and hit the turn one wall destroying his Confederate Racing Chevy. Fortunately the young driver was not injured.
Roach set sail at the drop of the green with only Jared Allison able to stay close to him. Following a lap 15 caution for Greg Brooke's spin, Allison was able to put some good pressure on Roach, but as the race wore on, the handling on Roach 's car proved to be just a bit better as he crossed the stripe ahead of Allison, Mike Hinegardner, Doyle Boatwright and Brooke. Roach also won the heat.
The Modified feature was filled with its usual action as Bob Beiler led the opening lap only to be overhauled by Shain Held. Jared Allison was going for his third win in a row, but spun out trying to avoid Held who got loose in turn four.
Meanwhile, veteran Jon Compagnone of Orange City had his car working to perfection and he took over the lead. Hoot Flynn was also running strong and closing on Compagnone when he spun in turn four with two laps to go.
Compagnone cruised from that point taking his first win here in several years. Point leader Corey Freed, who won the heat, came home second trailed by Chris Fadling, Held, and Beiler. Steve Thornbrugh, Terri Bryant, Flynn, Allison, and Jimmy Winks rounded out the top ten. The Super Stock race was again competitive and controversial at times as newcomer Johnny Brown took the early lead and set sail building up a sizable advantage. That lead was erased by several cautions but many of the top contenders would not see the checkered flag.
Ron Whaley, looking for his third win in a row, dropped a driveshaft after one of the restarts while point leader Jason Foster and John Castro were eliminated in crashes.
Brown kept his Monte Carlo out front as long as he could but he was no match for the smaller Chevy of Palm Bay's Brett Woodley who sped past on lap fifteen and led the final five laps to claim his first career win.
Robert Ward slipped by Brown with two laps to go and finished second, a career best for him as well, while Brown also had his best finish in third. Ray Mullis had a good run for fourth while Dave "White Fire" Wright came back from two earlier incidents to finish fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Donald Springer, Charles Fry, Buck Atherton, Bob Starr, and Robert Richards. Heats for Super Stocks were won by Woodley and Foster.
Jeff Wright found the right place to be in the Sportsman main as he led every lap as the action was pretty wild behind him.
Point leader Richard Hight was closing near mid-race when he slapped the front stretch wall hard and had to take his machine to the infield. Earl Beckner was next to take up the chase and he was closing until he spun out of contention with five laps to go. Wright had it easy from that point as he sped to his second win of the year over heat winner Andy Nichols, Timmy Todd, Jr., Joe Adams and Rip Dyal.
With unbeaten Sean Bass in Lakeland practicing for a big race on Saturday, someone else was finally going to win a Mini Stock feature. That someone would be Keith Lilley as he led most of the way to claim the win over Michael Seay, Pedie Allison, Josh Hermann, and John Cook. Lilley also won the heat race.
The Strictly Stock feature came down to a late race battle between the V-8 Monte Carlo of P.J. Mascaro and the 4 cylinder Dodge Daytona of ageless Red "Pop" Honaker. On the line was some cash put up by All Auto Salvage of Titusville.
The two drivers battled side by side over the final four laps with Mascaro just edging Honaker at the line. Andy Richards came home third followed by Tim Gibson and a Ford Taurus station wagon piloted by Dave Czerwinski. Joseph Jordan, Justin Collier, Joe Kelly, Eric Ripley and Jacob Lewis (Honaker's grandson) rounded out the top ten. Mascaro and Honaker won the heats.
