Rain Delayed FASTRUCKS makes great Citrus Sunday Show
|
by Larry MacMillan
A heavy Saturday afternoon rain dumped more than an inch of rain on Citrus County Speedway before the races could even get started and postponed a great show until the sun came out on Sunday afternoon. Most of the 40 plus FASTRUCKS and FAST Kids were able to make it back for the unusual Sunday show and the fans definitely got their money’s worth with 14 FAST Kids and 24 FASTRUCK Pros taking the green flag for their 25 and 50 lap main events. NEXTEL Cup contender Mark Martin flew in from his race in Phoenix to Crew Chief for his 13 year old son Matt in the Pro series which added to the fan and pit excitement.
The FASTKIDS trucks registered 14 contenders Saturday night with 13 taking the green flag. It took a while to get the race going to the young anxiety attacks and a green race track from all the rain Saturday night. Young Patrick Staropolli took the checkers in their 25 lap main event. Spencer Taylor won out in the race for second over John Kidwell while Brian Blum outraced Joe Coulter for fourth.
The FASTRUCK Pros saw Rick Morales set the pace most of the way being challenged on several occasions by quick Rick Moxley who tried to open the outside and inside lanes to no avail. Morales lost the lead with only 5 laps to go before a caution flag came out giving the top five a fresh start on the way to the checkers. Morales hooked up with two laps to the flag for his first feature win, followed by Moxley, Tim Schaffner, Gary Foxworth and 14 year old Dalton Zehr. The FASTRUCK series is due back at Citrus on the 27th of August.
Added to the wild afternoon were the Gulfcoast Modifieds starting a 19 car field for a 50 lap main event that saw pole sitter Tommy Bower set the pace, from flag to flag, for the win. Plenty of action was going on in his rear view mirror bringing on numerous caution flags for spins, collisions and contact in races for position. When the checkers flew Bower took the checkers followed by third starter Jimmy “Gator” Wagner. Fast qualifier Lee Collins started 10th , moved through traffic on the outside groove and was going for the lead when he connected with Bower, sending him to the rear of the pack. He came back through traffic to salvage third at the finish line. Outside pole sitter Jack Arnold III held out for fourth being chased by local modified rookie Curtis Neumann who started 8th in the field and qualified third fastest in time trials. Rounding out the top ten were Danny Partelo, Mark Nelson, Chris Robbins, Andrew Alderman and Ralph Bowman. The Gulfcoast Modifieds are scheduled for their second appearance at the fast 3/8ths mile on June 18th.
Three local divisions rounded out the race special. Mini Stocks saw three time Division Champion George Neumann top the 11 car field in both his heat and the 25 lap feature. Clint Foley again came from the back of the pack to take a solid second place finish over Chris Hooker, pole sitter Jason Reynolds and Jay McKenzie who was involved in an accident several weeks that kept him off the race track due to injuries.
The Hobby Stocks had to run 3 heats and a B-Main to qualify 24 of the 35 racers that showed for the Sunday special makeup race. Doc James Batson roared to the front early in both his heat and the feature and was untouchable once he got to the point. Don Teague managed to hold on to second when the checkers flew with Tommy Smith right on his rear deck at the finish line. Alvin Williamson and Bill Ryan locked on to the top five spots when the dust cleared. Don Teague and Curtis Flanagan took the heat wins and David Mattox took the B-Main.
Wayne Heater won the outside pole for the Thunder Stock 25 lap feature and had his work cut out for him right to the checked flag. Several racers diced with him for the top spot but Heater held out for his second win of the season. Point’s runner up Steven Stinedurf was right on his rear bumper at the finish. Michael Bocija held off Victor Shahid and Glen Colyer for third. Heat winners were Heater, Louie Coie, and Stinedurf.
Variety continues to be the theme for Citrus County Speedway’s 50th Anniversary season as Promoter Billy Hooker brings in the USA Winged Sprint Cars, and Open Wheel Lites. Added to the program will be the return of the regular Super Late Models, Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers in point’s races.
