Allison doubles in Super Lates and Mods at SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
Cocoa's Jared Allison and his crew did their homework this week, renting the Orlando Speedworld oval on Thursday. It all paid off on Friday night as Allison won both the 25 lap Super Late Model feature then topped the Modified field for the second week in a row in what was one of the most exciting finishes in some time.
After winning the heat, Allison had the outside pole for the start of the Super Late Model main event. After a brief battle with Eric Deffendall, Allison grabbed the lead just as Scott McKinley spun to bring out the first caution.
Allison led a tight pack at the restart and the close racing came to a head on lap six as Mike Hinegardner tapped Deffendal into a spin on the back stretch. Both cars were sent to the rear.
Michael Williams and Ronnie Roach took up the chase on Allison, but Roach hit the front stretch wall on lap nine and suffered enough damage to send him to the infield and out of the race.
Everyone expected a big charge from Williams but it never materialized as Allison led the rest of the way to take his first SLM win of the year and add to his current point lead. Williams took the checker in second followed by impressive youngster David Pollen, Jr. who had veteran Florida short-tracker Dick Anderson tutoring him during the evening.
Deffendall and Hinegardner came back from their earlier altercation to snare the fourth and fifth place spots ahead of Mack Hanbury, McKinley, Greg Brooke and Roach.
Allison's victory in the Modified feature wasn't nearly so easy. Heat winner Glen Bradley was looking great as he grabbed a comfortable early lead only to see the caution fly on lap four as Chris Gillespie and Shain Held locked horns in turn four. On the ensuing restart, Allison and Corey Freed got into a bumping contest on the back stretch send both into separate slides.
The two drivers were sent to the rear and that made for some exciting action the rest of the way.
Bradley continued to set the pace but Allison and Freed were on a mission and quickly sliced their way back up to second and third. Bradley was doing an excellent job of covering the low groove so Allison opted for the high side of the track while Freed dogged Bradley from the low side.
Allison was able to make his car stick on the high line and he grabbed the lead on the final lap as Freed tried the high line himself coming off turn four. Freed and Bradley made contact with Freed sliding sideways across the stripe for second as Bradley kept his car off the wall after suffering a flat tire and settled for third. Chuck Burkhalter nailed down the fourth spot ahead of Dennis Wheeler, Gillespie, Held, Jason Boyd and Pat Carter.
The Sportsman feature was also a great race as heat winner and pole sitter Rusty Ebersole spun early allowing Jeff Wright to take command. Charlie Vest had his Volusia County Race Cars machine working well in the high groove and he and Wright battled side by side for several laps before Vest forged ahead to grab the lead and eventual win.
Wright held on for second despite considerable pressure from Richard Hight who took third spot at the checker. Last week's winner Andy Nichols was a close fourth followed by Ebersole, Joe Adams, Timmy Todd, Jr., Eric Travis and Rip Dyal.
Tenth starting Ron Whaley needed only nine laps to wrest the lead away from Jason Foster as he topped the Super Stock field for the second week in a row and scored his third win of the year.
John Castro made a late charge up to second while Brett Woodley claimed third spot after Foster spun coming down for the checker. Foster recovered and still got fourth with Tom Vento in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Dave "White Fire" Wright, Jeff Parrish, Donald Springer, Robert Ward and Paul Cornelius.
Heat wins for Super Stocks were taken by Wright and Whaley. The Strictly Stocks normally run for trophies only, but thanks to All Auto Salvage of Titusville, JK Racing of Largo and Super Stock driver John Castro, $100 was up for grabs on the night.
Paul Kelly looked like he might be a giant killer on this night as he led the early going in his lime-green "Neon" Dodge Neon. But a sick engine proved to be his undoing as P.J. Mascaro put his Chevy Monte Carlo out front and never looked back as he would be the driver to "cash in."
Red "Pops" Honaker started well back in the field but was right on Mascaro's tail as the checker fell with point leader Tim Gibson coming home third just ahead of heat winner Andy Richards while Kelly nursed his car home fifth. Ray Brown, Bob Snyder, Carl Peters, Jeff Woodrough and Paul Wilson rounded out the top five.
Sean Bass again dominated Mini Stock action remaining unbeaten for 2005 while winning his fifth consecutive feature. Bass took command from Michael Saey just past half way and breezed to yet another easy victory.
Seay saw a strong run go awry as he and heat winner Josh Hermann tangled on the final lap allowing Keith Lilley to slip past and claim the runner-up spot.
Pedie Allison was third followed by John Cook, Seay, Hermann and Bob Miller who was debuting his new Mitsubishi Mini Stock, one of the prettiest cars to come out in some time.
