It was another night jam packed with racing action at the Bronson Motor Speedway. Following the rainout from the previous week, the Sunbelt Super Late Model Series was in town for 125 laps of scorching hot racing action!
Also included in the program were the stars of the American Building Materials / Florida Mini Stock Challenge. The regulars of the Bronson Racing Series completed the night’s racing activities. In addition, the Easter Bunny also made an appearance to the delight of all the children in attendance.
Once again, qualifying got underway promptly at 7:30 with the Sunbelt Super Late Models taking the track first. Eighteen of the best late model drivers from all over the Southeast were in contention for the top spot. Drivers traveled from as far away as Arkansas for a chance to compete at the high banks of BMS.
Sub-thirteen second laps would be the order of the day in qualifying. Jason Boyd set the modern era track record with a blistering lap of 12.908 seconds. After the draw for inversion, Boyd would start the race in third place. A disaster at the start would eliminate top contenders once again as anxious drivers crashed before the green flag fell. Outside front row starter, Brock Oglesby spun in front of the entire field collecting many cars. Although after a brief cleanup, and caution all but two of the drivers were able to continue.
Wayne Anderson moved up to the outside row one and beat upstart contender, Jeff Choquette to turn one. As Anderson showed the way, many of the battered cars were able to move back into contention. On many occasions Choquette challenged Anderson for the lead, although Anderson fended him off.
In the latter stages of the event, Choquette would get shook out of line and fade back to fifth. Fain Skinner and Jay Middleton which were both involved in the pre-race crash rose to second and third respectively. Both drivers were piloting cars that showed heavy damage. In the end though, it would be Anderson fighting off the entire field for yet another dramatic win at Bronson Motor Speedway.
Later in Florida Mini Stock Challenge action, the twenty eight car field was set for the start of their feature. Thirty eight cars were on hand to try to qualify for the second series race of the season. The field was made up of the fastest twenty cars on time and the top eight from the last chance race. Local favorite Ronnie Hicks found himself on the point for the start and led the first ten laps. Unfortunately, on lap eleven, Hicks lost control of his racer and the lead. Former series champ Dustin Deschamps took control of the event. Fast qualifier, Robbie Storer was in hot pursuit in the final stages of the event but time ran out on his effort. Storer followed Deschamps to the finish by five car lengths.
Thunder Cars were the first of the Bronson regulars to take to the speedway. Bobby Taylor started on the front row and beat Charlie Kennedy to turn one. From that point the chase was on with Willard Driggers and Kennedy chasing the leader Taylor. Taylor was able to fend off all challengers on his way to his first win of the year. Driggers and Kennedy salvaged top three finishes as the race came to a close.
In Pure Stock action young Tommy Conquest was looking to backup his win from the previous week’s action. A favorable draw placed his #72 Gainesville Ice special on the pole of the start of the feature. The start was a little sloppy with the caution waving on the first start attempt. The crash would eliminate Bobby Johnson from the feature event. On the restart, Conquest was able to motor away from the field to pick up his second consecutive win. Jason Holbrook was second and hard charging John Mamph wound up third.
The Hungry Howie’s Sportsman feature rounded out the Bronson Racing Series events for the evening. Arthur Conquest assumed the lead at the beginning of the contest. He was able to maintain the lead with his Conquest Construction entry until the caution waived on lap 15. Scott Wilkerson and Kyle Habig tangled off turn four and spun into the infield. At the same time contact occurred between Conquest and multi-time winner Robbie Cooper. Cooper was penalized and sent to the rear, but recovered to finish in Second. From that point Conquest never looked back on his way to his first Hungry Howie’s Sportsman feature win.
Next week, more great late model action in store for the fans at confines of Bronson Motor Speedway. The Goodyear Late Model Challenge series storms into town for 100 laps of spectacular racing. In addition, the Bronson Racing Series will compete with Thunder Cars, Mini and Pure Stocks as well as the Hungry Howie’s Sportsman and Harvey Wallbangers.
