Adams tops USCS Sprints at Five Flags
|
PENSACOLA, FL - Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL opened the 2005 O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series season with a wire-to-wire victory Friday night in the 30-lap main event at Five Flags Speedway. Adams outran a sensational young second-generation driver Kevin Swindell of Bartlett, TN.
"I know all eyes were on Kevin Swindell tonight, butour Shaw car is still the car to beat," Adams said of his young challenger and his own race car, the #4a Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott.
Swindell, the 16-year-old son of Sammy Swindell, made his first ever winged outlaw sprint car race on asphalt a memorable one with a second-place finish in his Wirtgen America Maxim/Kistler.
In qualifications, Swindell set a new Five Flags Speedway track record with a lap around the ½-mile high-banked paved oval in 14.462 seconds for an average speed of 124.464 miles per hour. Swindell was also the Rookie of the Race, and the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race.
Veteran Wayne Reutimann Sr. of Zephyrhills, FL, who made his first Five Flags Speedway start 40 years ago, finished third in the Case Constructing Avenger/Snyder. Reutimann Sr. won the K&N Filters Third-Place Award.
Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL took the fourth spot in the Martin Structures, Inc. Shaw/ZRE, and Dave Steele of Tampa, FL was fifth in the Northside Propane Fedor 1/Gaerte. Steele won the SpeedMart Top Five Award.
The defending and four-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN finished sixth in the Goodson Farms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar, and also picked up the FSR Performance Award. Wayne Reutimann Jr. of Zephyrhills, FL started his Case Constructing Hurricane/Snyder 16th and finished seven.
Brice Wrenn of Lexington, SC made his first-ever pavement start by driving the Stainless Fabricators ERI-Raptis/Gaerte to an eighth-place finish. Ryan Myers of Eldorado, OH finished ninth in the Garrett Myers Farms Domelt/Garrett-Myers.
The 2004 O'Reilly USCS Rookie of the Year R.J. Johnson of Decatur, TN had to take a provisional and start 22nd and last on the grid. The 17-year-old driver rallied his Leaf Race Wear/Pin Rings J&J/ZRE through the field for a tenth-place finish. Johnson picked up the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race Award.
After winning the K&N Filters Pole Award, Adams took the lead at the start of the race, but before the field could complete the first lap of competition, Doug Berryman of Fremont, OH brought out the caution flag when his Rebman Truck Service Shaw/Gressman made contact with the first turn wall. Berryman was the recipient of the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award.
On the restart, Adams once again took the lead and never looked back. Adams led the fifth lap and earned the Outlaw Brakes Fast Brake of the Race Award. Swindell got around Reutimann Sr. on the opening lap to take the second spot. Swindell got to within a few car-lengths of Adams in lapped traffic, but was never able to make a challenge for the lead.
Wrenn won the Engler Machine and Tool first eight-lap heat race, Steele won the ButlerBuilt second eight-lap heat race, and Adams won the Koolbeans Trophies third eight-lap heat race. Reutimann Jr. won the ten-lap Consolation Race.
The O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour moves to Mobile International Speedway in Mobile, AL on Saturday night.
