Morrison Continues Winning Ways At CCS
|
By CLAUDE LEWIS
Phil Morrison has had a reputation of being Mr. Excitement and sometimes then some, but this season has seen the Punta Gorda hotshoe stay out of trouble. And the car and driver combination have spoken for themselves. Morrison was third at Ocala last weekend. The previous weekend he was second in a 100-lapper at DeSoto.
Saturday night, Phil The Thrill and his No. 63 car sponsored by Charlotte Exterminators ran away from the rest of the field in the 50-lap feature for Open Wheel Modifieds at Charlotte County Speedway.
Morrison credits the extra edge to Ronnie Barnett, a former Modified driver who now operates the Parts Place speed shop parts business at CCS. Morrison said he will be taking his fast act to short tracks across Florida this year.
On Saturday, Morrison started seventh in the nine-car field. He was out front by the fourth lap. The only car that could come close to hanging with him the rest of the way was the No. 15 driven by Bill Atkins. Still, Morrison won by a comfortable margin.
Doug Spitzer was third, Jimmy Wagner fourth and Port Charlottes Bill Shaffer fifth in the King Excavating No. 99 car. Saturday nights other 50-lapper was run by the Sportsman division. Eleven cars lined up for the green.
Punta Gorda's Mike Holmes was the early leader, but the No. 92 car he was driving was taken up the track in turn one by the No. 71 of L.B. Skaggs, who took over the lead. It was a three-car race from there with Dale Dean and Ander Jackson chasing Skaggs. Skaggs bobbled on lap 27, and Dean charged to the front.
From there, he was able to hold off Skaggs to the checkered. Roger Smith of Naples was third, edging out Arcadias Johnny Cassady. Holmes was sixth. Jackson crashed and was eighth. Chris Huntoon, who got married earlier in the day, had engine trouble and was 10th. The Road Warrior 25-lap feature saw an entertaining duel between John Garrett and Jackson, who raced side-by-side for a good chunk.
They finished 1-2 with Jesse Gargus taking third in the 19-car field. In Thunder Trucks, Mike Bialecki of Fort Ogden made it three feature wins in a row. Wild Joe Dutton was second in the 5 truck.
In Action Glass Super Stocks, five cars ran nose to tail the entire 25 laps. The finishing order had Tommy Huffstutler, Chuck Sweet, Stu VanDevender, Brian Richardson and Eric Smith. Peter Amelotte remained a strong force in 4-Cylinders, taking the 10-lap dash involving 15 cars. The guest divisions were Pro Challenge and Modified Lites (Dwarf cars). Pro Challenge saw the brother combo of Brad and Rod Sanders finish 1-2. The siblings hail from Lehigh Acres. There were a lot of Modified Lites 17 cars putting on an entertaining show.
Ron Towles won in the 01 car. Rock Lundeen was second and Mike Belusar third. The return of the Limited Late Model Pacifier 100 series highlights this coming Saturday nights action at Charlotte County Speedway, a 3/8-mile paved oval located in Punta Gorda.
