Wayne Anderson Dominates Citrus Pro Modified 100
|
by Larry MacMillan
One hundred forty seven cars registered to take on Citrus County Speedway’s 3/8ths mile asphalt in week three of their 50th Anniversary schedule. Six divisions went in heat and feature action in the opening rounds of the chase for the 2005 point’s crowns while the Pro Modifieds qualified in time trials for the their 100 lap season opener with 13 races on their 2005 schedule.
Wayne Jefferson worked on his modified changing the transmission through most of the 27 car time trials and was the last to go on the clocks. He was only allowed one lap due to being late but that is all it took to win fast qualifying honors with a 13.7 second run. Pulling the number 10 pill put him in tenth starting spot with Wayne Anderson going to the pole flanked by 9th fast qualifier Tommy Schnader for the start of their 100 lap main event.
The pair took the point from the green flag and ran a beautiful and dominant race that saw a lot of ugly racing behind them. Sixteen cars were still running after 11 caution flags and 90 laps, 30 of which were run under caution. With 10 laps remaining it took two restarts to get back on track with the most severe wreck wading up six cars with the one lap to go sign starting lap 91, delaying the final 10 laps under green to finish for about 15 minutes.
Wayne Anderson managed a flag to flag win followed by Tommy Schnader, Lee Collins, Ritchie Smith, Wayne Jefferson, Billy Bechtelheimer, Kevyn Terry, Rob Partelo, Ron Campbell and Allen McCafferty rounding out the top ten.
The Sportsman division opened their 2005 points season with a 15 car field that saw Rick Kase establish himself as the man to beat with a convincing heat win and outrunning Doc James Batson for the feature win.
Frank Buchanan moved from fifth to third when the checkers flew, being chased by 1st heat winner Kyle Maynard and Tim Schull who just purchased Doc Batson’s old Sportsman. Johnny Sanders, Chris Marrimore Jr., Steve Elder, Bobby Taylor and Cody Moore locked onto the balance of the top ten spots. Sportsman will be running 15 races in 2005.
Figure 8’s also made their first appearance of the year with only one regular local driver making the race with the former Sunshine and Auburndale Gang making up most of the 17 car field. When the intersection action was all over it was Robbie Hage taking the checkers over Donnie Thomas, Darryl Hage, Clifford Rousseau and Dwayne Fults. Rounding out the top ten were #87 (unknown), Carl McPeak, Dave Purvis, John Thomas and early leader Bob Hage. This was the first of 14 races on the 2005 schedule for the Figure 8’s.
Thirty cars started the Hobby Stock 20 lap main with Curtis Flanagan establishing himself as a contender for the 2005 crown after taking a couple of years off from his racing activity. It was a match race from the get go with the two heat winners racing to the checkers with Flanagan out dueling Doc James Batson for the win. Don Teague held off 12th starter George Webb and 27th starter Bill Ryan in the race for third.
“The Silver Streak” Robbie Storer pulled off a very convincing win over the 25 car Mini Stock starting field that drew a large field in preparation for next week’s Mini Stock Challenge race at Citrus County Speedway. Defending champion Jim Curry made a great showing holding out for second over Jay McKenzie, 24th starter Ronnie Larson and 25th starter Chris Hooker. Heat winners were Jim Curry, Robbie Storer and Jay McKenzie.
Glen Colyer was the dominant force in Thunder Stock action with a flag to flag win but lost his win in post race inspection. D.J. Macklin inherited the win over Rick Badessa, Michael Bocija, Steven Stinedurf and Larry Ivannisci. Macklin was also awarded the first heat win due to Colyer’s D.Q. and Michael Bocija picked up the win in the second heat.
Wrapping up the race night, John Crichton made it two in a row and a heat win in 4 Cylinder Bomber action, Donald Guy, John Cummins, Rodger Blevins and Mathew Cummins locked in the top five spots over the ten car starters in their 15 lap feature run.
Next Saturday 3/5/05 will see Citrus’ final race before the Citrus County Fair shuts the races down until April 2nd . This will close out the first four weeks of the season with the Super Late Models in the Sunbelt Series 125, the Mini Stock Challenge Series, The Southern Sportsman Series and the local Hobby Stocks in the only point race of the night. April 2nd will restart the 50th Anniversary Schedule to run through November 12th 2005 with only one night off for the Pepsi 400 at Daytona on July 2nd.
