..2/4/05
..Beaming as he posed for pictures in his new Bass Pro Shops red uniform, Danny Lasoski told the crowd, Its good to come down to Florida and finally get a good run. We experimented a lot this week, but after a bunch of changes we got it right, said the Dude after winning the third and final preliminary night of the 29th Annual Sprint Winernationals at East Bay Raceway Park, Friday night.
I need to thank my car owner, Tony Stewart for securing the deal with Johnny Morris of Bass Pro Shops for a five year sponsorship. We are certainly going to put forth the effort needed to give Bass maximum exposure to a new audience during our time together, explained the winner. We are also pleased to say that J.D. Byrider and Mopar are on board with us again.
For the first two shows, the team had timed poorly and that held true for tonight. However, after starting deep in 20th spot for the 25 lap A-Main, Lasoski got his elbows up and drove the wheels off his new Eagle which was powered by a new Kistler Mopar. We come down here for a little vacation and to do some testing. The Florida tracks are usually a little sandy and we cant apply what we learn to the rest of the country, but we can use a lot of what we are trying with set-ups.
Admitting that early in the evening, I almost knocked the fence down
..the push was so tight, his crew chief, Jimmy Carr had Todd Splain and Mike Kemper change a lot of stuff before the heat and the car was a little better. More changes just before the feature made the difference for tonight.
Originally, the starting field showed Jimmy Nier and Danny Smith in the front row, with Jason Meyers and Kelly Kinser making up row two. Next, it was Freddy Rahmer and Chad Kemenah in row three. Fast timer of the 40 cars on hand, Craig Dollansky failed to qualify through his heat and had to start seventh after coming from the B-Main.
It was an up-hill battle to get the feature started. Five attempts were made to get the first lap in the books. First, Josh Wells, Kevin Swindell and Nick Nabors experienced problems, then Erin Crocker spun. On the third try, Smith picked the front wheels off the track and slammed down hard. Number four involved Wells and Cody Geldart. Finally, Trevor Lewis brought out the yellow for the fifth time.
Track officials ordered a single file start and the race was underway. Nier showed the way for the first three rounds, followed by Kinser, Meyers, Kemenah and Rahmer. Kemenah and Meyers took turns in third spot as Lasoski used the high line to move up to sixth by lap six. Meyers surged into the lead ahead of Nier on lap eight as Lasoski passed Rahmer and claimed fifth.
With an inside move on Kemenah, Lasoski then advanced to fourth on lap nine. He next got by Kinser and Nier on the inside and set his sights on Meyers by lap eleven. In turn two, Lasoski went under Meyers and streaked ahead to lead lap 14.
Nier was running third when he clipped the wheel of the lapped car of Wells and the time needed to pull Wells clear of the track on lap 15, made it impossible to finish the race without a fuel stop. So, an open red was called and the field was refueled. The restart line-up showed Lasoski leading Meyers, Nier, Kemenah, Kinser and Greg Hodnett.
Once the green waved, Lasoski went to the high groove and managed to hold off Meyer. Kemenah, Kinser and Nier completed the top five. Terry McCarl, Freddy Rahmer, Sammy Swindell, Hodnett and Jason Sides rounded out the top ten.
Heats went to Lance Dewease, Jeff Shepard, Jason Sides and Lasoski. The B-Main sent Dollansky, Greg Wilson, McCarl and Erin Crocker to the A-Main. The Gulf Coast Produce Strawberry Dash was won by Paul May while the Florida Mini Sprint 20-lap feature went to Steve Buckwalter.
The top six in points locked into Saturday's A-Main are Kemenah, Lasoski, Meyers, Kinser, Rahmer and Sammy Swindell. They will be inverted.
