by Marty Little
HIALEAH, Fla. - Tommy Styer was able to work under leader Kendrick Gomez on the final lap to win Saturday night's 25 lap limited late model headliner Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.
Gomez led from the third lap and appeared headed to his first victory of the season but Styer, locked in a furious points battle with David Weaver, stormed from the back of the field for his eighth score this season. Gomez claimed runner-up honors over Sean Bulaskas, Joe Edwards and Ernie Berger.
David Myer paced the first 41 laps of the 75 lap street stock special but it was former division champion Travis McCoy who powered to his fourth victory of the season. McCoy carefully picked his way through the 16 car field before overhauling Myer on lap 42 and was never headed from there. Stephen Khaleel claimed second money over Myer, Greg Gorniak and T.C. McElyea.
Mini stock action saw David Russell and his potent Toyota score his fifth victory this season in the 25 lap run. Kenny Strong paced the first eight laps before Russell took command never looked back. Eli Pollard, Bill Calder and Joe Locascio rounded out the top five finishers.
Timmy Ryan was the fourth and final leader of the 25 lap cyclone feature as he took command from his brother Sean on lap 17 then held off Eddie Lawler for the victory, his sixth this year. David Dielmann checkered third over Josh Gorniak and Patrick Staropoli.
The visiting Fastruck 75 was dominated by pole sitter James Wright in near flag to flag fashion but it was local driver Tim Shaffner who was flagged the victor. A late race accident produced a green, white, checkered finish and on the final lap Wright's engine expired as the yellow waved but the field raced back to the waving checkered flag with Shaffner's Chevrolet first to the stripe. Tom North, Tommy King, Mike Powers and Sean Bass rounded out the top five finishers in the caution marred event.
The companion Fastkids 25 lap run was dominated by new champion Dalton Zehr as he easily outpaced Taylor Spencer, David Wilson, Levi Hobbs and Joey Morales.
Hialeah's 2004 season will conclude on this week (Dec. 11.)
