Three Wide Highlights CRASH-A-RAMA at SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
A standing room only crowd was treated to some awesome action Friday night as Orlando Speedworld closed out its Friday night schedule for 2004 with the Fall Crash-A-Rama.
There were many highlights to the evening but the School Bus Figure eight race may have been the best one ever.
Nineteen buses started the 15 lap affair with two red flags needed for roll-overs involving Billy Belflower and Tom Campbell. Bobby Crites led the early going until passed by Chuck "Junkyard Dog" Rush. Rush's lead was short-lived as he was passed by Indiana visitor Clayton Rhoton.
Rhoton led but Rush kept the pressure on. Crites had dropped back to fifth at one point but began to reel the leaders in during the late laps.
As the leaders hit the final turn, Rush dove inside Rhoton and the two bumped and banged their way to the finish. However, Crites got up a full head of steam and passed both of them coming down to the checkered flag to take the win as the three buses crossed the finish line side by side. Rhoton just edged Rush for second place as the crowd went wild.
Twenty-eight starters filled the track for the combined Camper Trailer/Boat on Trailer race and when the carnage was complete, David Lavine emerged the winner.
In other action, Raybo took the win in the Blindfold Race, The team headed up by brothers Scott and Gary Tyler won the Auto Roller Derby Race, William Hindman racked up eight points to easily win the Roll-over Contest in a Dodge Colt, Alex Froman out-lasted his brother Tom and 19 other competitors to win the Compact Car Demo Derby while Fred Cole bested an eighteen car starting field to win the V-8 Demo Derby.
Tim Chitwood thrilled the fans with his one-man stunt show along with warming up the crowd with his unbelievable jet truck.
The East Coast Freestyle Motocross Team and the Signal 12 Motorcycle Stunt Group also performed to the packed house while the Modified Lite cars opened up the show with an exhibition race which was won by Phil Krauthoff.
The Mod Lite/Open Wheel Lite cars will be in action this coming Saturday afternoon, December 4th, for the Florida Cup, twin 40 lap races for the fast motorcycle engined machines. Also in action will be the RE/MAX Legends Cars, Badeleros, Hurricanes and FAST Karts. Racing starts at 2:30PM.
