Williams Tops Super Lates at Orlando SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
Veteran driver Michael Williams, driving his new car sponsored by his new business Volusia County Racecars, sped off with a convincing win in the 25 lap Super Late Model feature Friday night at Orlando Speedworld.
Point leader Ricky Wood led at the drop of the green, but caution was out at the end of the first lap for a spinning Ron DiCandio. Williams slipped into second spot on the restart and made a bold outside move on Wood two laps later to snare the lead.
From that point Williams was the class of the field with the only other slowdown coming on lap 15 when DiCandio spun again and Rich Bates hit the turn two wall at the same time.
Williams quickly pulled away on the restart and won easily. Wood was holding off a slew of other competitors when he came upon the slower car of Russ Shaw coming down for the checker. Wood shoved Shaw's car out of the way as the field crossed the start-finish line to take second, but the ensuing melee behind him as cars checked up, saw several go into wild spins with Bobby Fleckinger taking a hard lick into the wall severely damaging his race car.
The official order of finish was Williams, Wood, Rich Clouser, Jared Allison and Ronnie Roach as the top five. Wood and Clouser won the heats.
Wood, who is also leading the Modified points chase, led flag to flag in an uninterrupted 15 lap dash for the open wheelers. Mark Emberson was a close second trailed by Hoot Flynn, John Foerg, and Corey Freed. Ricky Wood also won the Modified heat race.
A lap three red flag was needed in the Sportsman feature as Danny Shearer had an engine problem in turn three and spun, getting hit by both Bill Hall and Dusty Cornelius. All three cars were done for the night but none of the drivers were hurt.
Bobby Joe Woodley took the lead from Jeff Wright on lap two and sped to an apparent victory but the win was taken away in tech after improper valve springs were found in his engine.
Patrick Thomas, making only his second start of the year, inherited the Sportsman win followed by Charlie Vest, Rich Hight, Spencer Lemmerman and Bruce Gayton.
Woodley and Earl Beckner were the Sportsman heat winners.
Josh Hermann dominated a green to checker run for the Mini Stocks leading wire to wire for his fourth win of the year. Keith Lilley made a late charge to second with point leader Chad Ashley third over R.J. Arnone and Dick Laszlo.
Roger Benton led the first half of the Super Stock feature, but point leader Ted Head was not to be denied as he took the lead following a lengthy red flag period on lap eight.
Following a restart after Bob Starr's spin, James Frisbee spun in turn one. At the same time, Brandon Evans got loose on the backstretch and came across the front end of John Castro's car. That contact spun Evans backwards into the concrete pit divider. The water barrels placed at the barrier literally exploded from the impact showering backstretch flagman Butch Pierce and several other bystanders with water as Evans' car came to a halt a few feet away. After a few anxious moments, Evans emerged from the car nursing only a sore shoulder, but his car was a total loss.
Following the clean-up, Head led the way to the checker despite some late pressure from Bomber Bill Loomis who had to eventually settle for second. Jason Foster, Roger Benton and John Castro completed the top five.
Super Stock heats were won by Head and Loomis.
Richie Laszlo was back to winning form in the Strictly Stocks, passing a determined William Hindman on lap ten and driving away to the win. Hindman kept his Mustang in second at the finish followed by Brandon Thomson, Gary Lehman and Bob Snyder
