by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (October 23, 2004) A perfect night, not too hot not too cool, greeted fans Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway. The sounds of motorcycles in the background could not drown out the sweet sound of the stockcars. Double points at the end of a season can lead to some real hot racing. Winning could make or break championship hopes. With only two Super Lates in the pits, the Lates and Super Lates were fixed together. Rusty Ebersole had the pole for the Super Lates and won followed by A.J. Factor in his second appearance at the track this year. Alan Bruns had the pole for the Late Models and quickly took the point on the green followed by Don Hess, Sam Watts, Robert Anderchek and Jeremy Fitch. Hess passed Bruns and took over the lead and never looked back taking the win over Sam Watts, Alan Bruns, Robert Anderchek and Jeremy Fitch. Second in points Troy Atkins was not able to make the feature due to hitting the turn three wall in hot laps. Matt Wheeler had the pole for the Open Wheel Modified feature but it was Alan Bruns who took the point on the green followed by Jim "Hoot" Flynn, -George Murphy, Wheeler and Mark Vandevender. The caution came out for Kevyn Terry who spun. On the restart it was Bruns, Flynn, Murphy, Wheeler and Jamie Skinner. Skinner and Wheeler are going side-by-side for fourth as they touch going into turns 1 and 2. Skinner spins and retires from the race as Wheeler goes to the rear for the restart. On the restart, Flynn leads the way over Bruns, Murphy, Vandevender, and Blake. Kevyn Terry takes over fifth putting Blake sixth as Jim "Hoot" Flynn takes the checkered followed by Alan Bruns, George Murphy, Mark Vandevender, and Kevyn Terry. John Nusbaum had the pole for the Sportsman feature but the yellow came out before the first lap was completed for Ken Lewton who spun on the backstretch. A complete restart was in order as Dale Clouser took the point over John Nusbaum,. Ken Lewton, Bruce McGonigal, and Donny Williams.
Williams worked hard between the heat and the feature to repair his car after an accident in the heat race. Williams was able to work his way to third but had to settle for third as Clouser took the win followed by John Nusbaum, Donny Williams, Ken Lewton and Bruce McGonigal. Josh Wronkowski had the pole for the Super Stock feature but it was Jeff Colburn who took the point on the green followed by Jack Lenzen, Charlie Collins, Wronkowski, and Jay Trocki. Colburn suddenly begins to smoke, slows as the caution comes out. Colburn continues and the race goes back green until Jody Ortelli spins coming off 2 and the yellow is shown again. Lenzen holds the point on the restart followed by Collins, Colburn, Wronkowski and Trocki. Danny Lester then brings out the caution as he loses a tire in turn 2. Lenzen has the point on the restart followed by Collins, Ron Whaley, Trocki and Wronkowski. But it is a short green as Ortelli spins on the frontstretch. Lenzen holds the point but it is Collins and Whaley who are going side-by-side, door-to-door for second. Whaley charges, Collins holds and does not give an inch.l Finally Whaley puts the pedal down and takes over second with Collins sliding to third. Barry Parks brings out the caution as he spins in turns 3 and 4. Lenzen holds the point followed by Whaley, Collins, Trocki and Jason Foster on the restart. The yellow is shown again for Philip Luizzo who spun on the frontstretch. Lenzen holds the point but fourth place Jay Trocki brings out the caution when he loses a tire. The race goes back green as Lenzen leads the way to the checkered followed by Ron Whaley, Charlie Collins, Jason Foster and Josh Wronkowski. Brian Bellaw had the pole for the Mini Stock feature and was on rails as he lead a caution-free race to the checkered. On the green it was Bellaw, Dick Laszlo, Ben Cutler Jr., Pug Puglisi, and Ted Vulpius. Vulpius made his way up to second but was unable to catch Bellaw for the lead. Taking the checkered was Brian Bellaw, Ted Vulpius, Dick Laszlo, Ben Cutler Jr., and Pug Puglisi. Strictly Stocks saw Richard Renzi on the pole for their feature but it did not take Richie Laszlo long before taking the point and never looking back. Laszlo was followed by Renzi, Gordon Houck, Curtis Smith and Mike Wofford on the green. Wofford passes Renzi for second as Bruce McGonigal Jr. took over fifth. Laszlo took the win followed by Mike Wofford, Richard Renzi, Gordon Houck, and Bruce McGonigal Jr. Charlie Collins and Andy Dyson took the Sack race win.
