Jim Bertotto impressive in School Bus Figure 8 Win
Kevin Durden, Bill (Grouchy) Myers, and Car Owner Alan Southard in Victory Lane at Bronson Motor Speedway.
(October 22, 2004) Beautiful weather, Lots of fans, Great racing. What better way to spend a Friday evening ! The fans at Bronson Motor Speedway got all they hoped for in an exciting night of short track action.
Open Wheel Modified action was first on the track for the Feature races. The anticipated battle between Gary Southard, Gene Owen and Kevin Durden wound up being 1 car short, as Southard broke a rear suspension arm in the early laps of the race. As the race got going again, Durden worked his way to the front of the field, and held a comfortable lead for the remainder of the race. The race for second was hotly contested, with Owen, Buddy Hughes, Glen Ervin and Mike Hinegardner all trying to advance. The race ended with Durden claiming his third win in a row, followed by Gene Owen, and Glen Ervin.
The Pure Stock Feature was exciting as well. Michael Baker finally managed to rid himself of the bad luck that has plagued him recently, and put together a strong, consistent run to claim the victory. Close behind were Arnold Hughes, Jason Holbrook, and A.J. Northup, a group that had been all over each other the entire race, trying to pass for position.
The V8 Bombers had another new winner this week, as Dave Dinehart got his first feature win at BMS this season. It was a hard fought battle as Randy ONeal tried to find a way around the leader for almost the entire race. Ken Sheffield grabbed third place, followed by Reed Gard and Glen Colyer.
18 Figure 8 racers lined up to take the green flag in their feature event, and it was pure mayhem from start to finish. Along with a lot of bumping, pushing, shoving, and near collisions at the crossing, the racers also put on one great race. The 89 car of Rodney Davis took the early lead, and was running strong out front, until lapped traffic slowed his progress, and allowed Robbie Powell to close in and make the pass for the lead. Davis stayed with Powell and tried several times to retake the lead, but Powell managed to hold on for the win. Ronnie Schreifels took third followed by Gary Swain and Dwayne Fultz.
Last but by no means least, the School Buses rumbled onto the track. This was what the fans had been talking about for the last month, and they were ready for some Bus busting action. The bus of Aaron Robinson took the early lead, with Jim Bertotto right beside. After some close racing, Bertotto managed to put his bus in the lead. The fans were treated to some three wide racing, a few small hits at the crossing, and more near misses than could be counted. When it was all said and done, and the checkered flag waved, Bertotto had held on for the win, followed by Robinson and Gary Southard.
