Durden Makes it 2 in a row in Modified Action
By Rick Warren
The Sportsman Division was in the spotlight Friday night at Bronson Motor Speedway, as the time to run the rescheduled 50 lap event was at hand. Matt Blum and Rob Cooper sat on the front row as the field came to the green flag to start the race, followed by Patrick Menenga, Steve Anderson, David Christopher, Scott Wilkerson, Bobby Dixon and Phillip Rook. After a problem on the first start, the field came to the green one more time, and got a clean start, with Cooper driving by Blum to take the lead.
The real race turned out to be for second spot, between Blum, Menenga, and later in the race , Scott Wilkerson. As Cooper held a comfortable lead, the race between Blum and Menenga was tight, with Menenga trying everywhere on the track to find a way by Blum.
The two racers went at each other the entire race, and put on a great show of hard, clean racing. The race was slowed by 6 brief cautions for minor incidents, and kept the field bunched up for some good race battles through out the field. When the Checkered Flag waved, Rob Cooper came home the winner. Second went to Matt Blum, with Scott Wilkerson slipping by Menenga late in the race to claim third place. Bobby Dixon followed Menenga to the flag for fifth spot.
The Modified Feature was an excellent race, with action for the entire 30 laps. Current Points Leader Gene Owen took the early lead, followed by Gary Southard, Kevin Durden, Jason Garver and Chip Owen. Early in the race, Durden went to work on Southard, trying high and low to get around and take over second spot.
Durden finally got his opening off turn 4, and drove by Southard into second spot. Durden went to work on the leader, and after applying a lot of pressure, got his chance when Owen slipped entering turn 3. Durden drove by Owen, and Owen got freight trained , stuck in the high groove, as Southard and Kevyn Terry both were able to pass.
The race for second was heated, as Terry and Owen both were trying to advance in the running order. Time ran out, however, and Durden claimed his second win in as many weeks. Southard ran a strong second followed by Terry and Owen. Heat races were won by Owen and Southard.
The Pure Stock feature was exciting as well, with action throughout the field. These guys seem to enjoy trading paint, and live out the saying, Rubbins Racin ! After the dust and smoke had cleared, Donnie Roberts took the Victory, followed by Mike Baker, Joey Hunt, A.J. Northup, and Dwight Pinner. Heat races were won by Roberts and Hunt.
The V8 Bombers saw Berlon Weeks hold off Larry Welters for a close win, and also survive a Post- Race Protest to seal the deal. Third went to Glen Colyer, followed ny Randy ONeal.
The Mini Stock Division was the Foley and Foley show, as Clint Jr. and Sr. finished first and second, in field of cars that was a little bit short due to battle fatigue from last weeks FMSC race.
Dennis Copenhaven took top honors in the Race Cars of Yesterday, beating Mark Simpson and Dave Ridder to the finish Line.
