It was a great night of racing at Bronson Motor Speedway, as everyone was ready to race, but keeping a weather eye peeled for word on hurricane Frances. Mother Nature was kind, and gave us nice weather for the evening. The Open Wheel Modified Feature was first on the starting grid after intermission, and it had all the signs of a great race.
When the Green flag waved to start the race, things got very hectic at the front of the pack, and from mid-pack back it turned ugly in a hurry. Several cars tried to go through a space big enough for 1 car, and the result was not good. Several cars bounced off the back stretch wall, and each other. The crash sent the cars of Dave Barber, Glen Ervin and Ronnie Campbell and to the pit area. When the race restarted, Terry shot to the front, followed tightly by Buddy Hughes, Kevin Durden, Gene Owen and Chip Owen.
Terry looked to have the race under control as he opened a lead on the pack of cars battling for second. A mid-race caution wiped out Terry’s cushion over second place, and when the race restarted, action was furious. Durden was able to take advantage of a slip by Buddy Hughes and drive by him on the front straight. While Hughes was gathering his car back to the racing groove, Gene Owen and Jason Garver both drove by Hughes to join the race for the lead. With only 2 laps to go, coming off turn 2, Terry slid up in front of Durden. Slight contact was made with Terry spinning into the infield. The caution flag was displayed while the field was reset, with Terry remaining in the lead. Durden was placed at the end of the lead lap, but felt that the call was incorrect. With only 2 laps remaining, Durden chose to retire from the race. Terry held off a hard charge by Gene Owen at the restart, and went on to claim the win. Owen finished a close second, followed by Jason Garver, Buddy Hughes and Chip Owen. Heat races were won by Gene Owen and John Kahl.
Sportsman Feature action saw Robbie Cooper and Matt Blum take advantage of a slip by early leader David Christopher and have a race for the win among themselves. Cooper went on to open alead on Blum and grab the win. Christopher held on for third spot.
The Pure Stock Feature was a wild and crazy affair. A first lap incident saw race cars scattered all over the track, with A.J Northup coming out on the short end of the stick, with his racer requiring a lot of work to return to action. The race restarted with Dot Kelly holding the early lead, and a pile of cars on her bumper. Kelly got shuffled to the high groove and Jason Holbrook, Arnold Hughes, Donnie Roberts, Jeff Tillman and Daniel Pinner all getting by to battle for the lead. Their was never any certainty to the outcome of the race, as Hughes and Hunt tried every trick in the book to pass Holbrook. For most of the race their was never more than a bumper length separating the first 3 cars. Holbrook held on for the win, with Hughes and Hunt right behind. Heat Races were won by Hughes and Steve Brown.
The figure 8 feature was another wild race, with constant action form one end of the track to the other. Rodney Davis jumped to the lead early and was running a good race. Robbie Powell, last years figure 8 champion, was making a charge to the front, when a bumper fell (or was knocked) off another car. Powell hit the dbris, and flattened a tire. The caution was displayed while the bumper and several other large pieces of race cars were removed from the racing surface. Quick work by Powell’s crew got him back on the track on the same lap. Restarting from the rear, Powell put on a show for the crowd as he made his way thru the field. Powell took over second spot with 2 laps remaining, and went to work on Davis. Davis looked like he would be able to hold off the hard charging Powell, until lapped traffic came into play. Taking the white flag, Davis got blocked by a lapped car, and Powell drove by for the win. Third went to Ronnie Schreifels. In V8 Bomber action, Randy O’Neal put his car into another time zone, and won easily. Berlon Weeks and Glen Colyer followed O’Neal across the finish line. After the race, O’Neal’s car was protested, specifically asking to see the springs and shocks. The Race car was taken to the tech garage, and springs and shocks removed and presented to the Tech Inspector. The items were thoroughly check and measured, and found to be completely legal.
Clint Foley continued his winning ways, as he took the win in Mini-Stock action. Ronnie Hicks ran a strong second until his motor went south, as he neared the end of the race. Billy Smith finished second, followed by Clint Foley Sr.
Be sure to mark your calendar for next Friday, October 1, as the Fascar / Goodyear Challenge Series returns to the high Banks of Bronson Motor Speedway.
Final Results.
