Gene Owen, Doug Anderson Take Bronson Wins
|
By Rick Warren
Despite Mother Natures' efforts, hot racing action was the order of the evening at Bronson Motor Speedway Saturday night. The rains in the afternoon did little to dampen the enthusiasm of those racers in attendance to help the Speedway celebrate its anniversary. After running the heat races, and having a burnout competition on the front straight, it was time for the feature races to begin.

First on the track were the open wheel modifieds. When the green flag waved, Chip Owen fired to the lead, with Buddy Hughes and Gene Owen applying a lot of pressure on the leader. Chip Owen looked like he had his car on rails, and Hughes and Gene Owen couldnt find an opening to make the pass. On lap 28, coming off turn 4, Chip Owen slipped high, and Hughes and Gene Owen were able to drive by, leaving Chip in third place. Hughes held on to the front spot, and took the checkered flag for the win. In post race technical inspection, Hughes engine was found to not be in compliance with the specified rules, and as a result Hughes was disqualified, giving the win to Gene Owen. Second went to Chip Owen, with John Kahl finishing third.
The racers in the Sportsman Division put on a very good show, also. Last weeks winner, Doug Anderson managed to take the early lead, with David Christopher and Scott Wilkerson all over his rear bumper. As Anderson raced hard to maintain the lead, Christopher tried high and low, looking for an opening to try a pass. Anderson was able to hold off Christophers challenge, and claim his second win in two weeks. After the race Anderson complimented Christopher on his aggressive yet clean driving style. Matt Blum finished third, followed by Darrell Barry.
The Pure Stock Division was next on the program, and these racers put on a really wild show. Lots of passing, a great deal of paint swapping, tire smoke and tough racing was the blueprint for this race. Donnie Roberts worked his way to the front, with a pack of snarling racers on his tail. Roberts began to open a comfortable lead, as the pack behind him was fighting tooth and nail for every position. As Robert looked like he was about to check out and enter another zip code, his engine began to smoke heavily, forcing the leader to retire from the race. This left A.J. Northup in front, with Arnold Man Hughes and John Mamph trying hard to take the lead from him. Northup held on for the win, followed closely by Hughes and Mamph. Mike Baker finished in fourth with Tommy Ausburn taking fifth spot.
V8 Bomber action had Randy O'Neal waaaay out front, and running for the win, when problems developed for him as well. With 4 laps remaining, the Right Front hub on ONeals racer gave up, taking ONeal to the pit area. The bad break for ONeal turned out to be the break that Gerold Bryant has been looking for all year, as it allowed him to pick up his first ever Feature win.
Bryant claimed the victory over a very close running Berlon Weeks, with Reed Gard grabbing third.
Mini Stock Action saw Clint Foley Claim yet another win in this division. Billy Smith ran a very strong second, with Morris Richardson taking third. Final Results 08-21-2004
