Kennedy Endures for Win in CarQuest V8 Bomber 50 Lap Special
|
Southard Grabs OWM Win.
By Rick Warren
The stands were buzzing with excitement as the time drew near for the Carquest 50 lap V8 Bomber feature. The weather was amazingly nice, with overcast skies, and race time temps in the low 80’s!
Qualifying for the V8 Bombers didn’t produce any surprises, with Randy O’Neal turning the fast lap with a time of 16.384 seconds.
Second went to Ken Sheffield, with Charlie Kennedy holding the third fastest time. As the racers were lining up for the feature, the fans were busy cheering for their favorite.
When the race started Glen Colyer jumped to the early lead, with a pack of cars right on his bumper. The race went green for the first 9 laps, and then things got crazy. The field entered turn 1, and total mayhem ensued, with nearly every car involved in the action. Fortunately, no one was injured, and all were able to continue after the track was cleaned.
The race restarted with Colyer still in front, but only for a minute, as mechanical problems forced the leader to pit. Lap 11 saw a red flag, as the 55 car of Dustin Hughes made hard contact with the wall, and ended up in turn 1 on it’s roof.
Dustin emerged from the car unhurt, but the racer was done for the evening. After the restart, with Ottinger holding the top spot, O’Neal started to apply heavy pressure for the lead. As the two cars raced into turn 3, they locked bumpers and both slid toward the wall. O’Neals car suffered a flat tire, and pitted.
This allowed Ken Sheffield to take the lead, followed by Charlie Kennedy. Kennedy shadowed Sheffield for several laps, until Sheffield finally slipped in turn 1, and Kennedy drove by to take the lead. The race was slowed for several minor incidents, but when all was said and done, Kennedy took the win.
After post race inspection, the winners' car was declared to be within the rule specifications, and the finishing order was declared official.
The Sportsman race was another wild and wooly affair, with several cautions, and heated competition. Doug Anderson was the leader early in the race, and was racing hard, with a group of racers snapping at his heels. Rob Cooper and David Christopher got together as they were racing for third spot, bringing out a caution flag. The race restarted with Cooper and Christopher on the rear of the lead lap, and as the field took the green, Christopher tried to make a run on the outside, but the x3 of James Hendrickson got together with Christopher, causing Christopher to bang the wall on the front straight.
Both cars were forced to retire with flat tires. As the race continued, Cooper worked his way back to the front and began to challenge for the lead. As the field took the white flag, Cooper made a run on Anderson. The two cars made contact, with both spinning on the back straight. The race finished, and the official result placed Anderson back in the lead, for the win, with Cooper being credited with finishing at the end of the lead lap. Kimbo VanAernam finished second, followed by Brett Flagg.
The Pure Stock feature saw another first time winner this year, as William Long drove a strong consistent race to claim the victory. A.J. Northup worried Long the entire race, and even though he was able to pull alongside Long on a couple of laps, was never able to make the pass. Third went to Joey Hunt.
Gary Southard Claimed the win in Open Wheel action, passing Gene Owen and Chip Owen to take the win.
Clint Foley took the Mini Stock win, over Billy Smith and Clint Foley Sr.
