Full Moon Causes Crazy Action at SpeedWorld
|
by Jane Smith Bithlo, Fla. (July 30, 2004) The full moon definitely had his effect on Orlando SpeedWorld last night as things were just plain nuts. Once the announcer mentioned the full moon rising over the track, things changed. Seventeen Super Lates made their way to SpeedWorld for their 25 lap feature but we lost one, Morgan Hoover, in the heat race. For the feature, it was Jared Allison on the pole. Allison quickly took the point on the green followed by Patrick Conrad, Chris Fontaine, Ron Dicandio and Jeff Choquette.
Lap 3 sees the yellow for Jeff Choquette and Ron Dicandio who were running hard for fourth. Both rejoined the field in the rear. Allison holds the point on the restart with Conrad, Fontaine, Anderson and Rich Clouser in the top five. Anderson drops out of the field with some damage from the Dicandio - Choquette caution and is done for the night. Ronnie Roach makes his first appearance in the top five by passing Clouser and taking over fourth. Lap 9, Andy Dyndul and Mario Hernandez bring out the yellow as they get together in turn 4. Allison holds the point and Ricky Wood now comes into the picture as he takes fifth from Clouser. Lap 14 Bo Jackson spins and ends up in the infield with no power. But the caution is not thrown until Chris Fontaine spun in turn 2. Allison once again leads the way for Conrad, Roach, Wood, and Clouser. Lap 18 sees Scott McKinley, Rick Bates, and Russ Shaw all get together in turns 1 and 2. Ronnie Roach then retires to the pits. Allison still leads the way with Conrad, Wood, Clouser and Dicandio in the top five. Just as Allison is going to the checkered on the last lap on the backstretch, Conrad pushes too hard turning Allison, The yellow is not thrown and cars begin to spin changing the final running order. After leading the entire race, Allison ended up 11th with Ricky Wood taking the checkered flag over Rich Clouser, Bobby Fleckinger, Jeff Choquette, and Chris Fontaine. Patrick Conrad was given last place points and money for unsportsmanlike conduct on the frontstretch. Super Stocks saw Dave Wright almost get his first win. Wright, who lead every lap but the one that counts, took the point on the green followed by Ted Head, Bill Loomis, Bob Beiler, and Corey Freed. For 11 laps these guys went door-to-door until Freed and Jay Trocki got together in turn 4 bringing out the caution. Wright holds the point for the restart but it is a short green as Paul Cornelius brought out the yellow as he gets spun and hit in turn 4. Wright holds the point on the last restart but Head gets the better of him and takes over the lead and takes the checkered. Following Head to the checkered was Dave Wright, Bill Loomis, Bob Beiler and Bob Wines. Wines, who raced at Orlando SpeedWorld for many years, made his first appearance in 2004 and boy, were we glad to have him back. Bobby Joe Woodley had the pole for the Sportsman feature but it was Richard Hight who took the lead on the green followed by Bobby Joe Woodley, Charlie Vest, Bruce Gayton and Bill Hall. Lap 13 sees the only caution of the race when Vest spins trying to pass Jamie Kennedy and Gayton suffers a flat tire and must go in to the pits.
Hight holds the point on the restart and takes the checkered followed by Charlie Vest, Bobby Joe Woodley, Bill Hall and Jamie Kennedy. Woodley is penalized one spot for jumping the start changing the finishing order to Hight, Vest, Hall, Woodley and Kennedy. R.J. Arnone had the pole for the Mini Stock feature and quickly took the point over Chad Ashley, Burt Morse, David Castello, and Dick Laszlo. Sean Bass passes Laszlo and takes over fifth as Laszlo goes to sixth. Morse puts the pedal down and passes Ashley taking over second as Hermann comes in and passes Morse for second. But on lap 9, Hermann spins and must restart the feature in the rear. On the restart, Morse really puts the pedal down and takes over the lead as Arnone slips back to fourth with Bass in second and Ashley in third. Morse takes the checkered for his first feature win in 2004 followed by R.J. Arnone, Chad Ashley, Randy Blakeslee and David Castello. Castello was penalized one spot for jumping the restart and changed the finishing order to Morse, Arnone, Ashley, Blakeslee and Laszlo. The Open Wheel Modifieds had a caution free race with Jim "Hoot" Flynn on the pole and winning from the pole. No one could catch Hoot. Following Hoot across the checkered was Ricky Wood, George Murphy, Doc McKinney and Mark Emberson. Richie Laszlo won the Strictly Stock feature. ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD OFFICIAL RESULTS
