Rain Misses SpeedWorld as Racing Heats Up
|
by Jane Smith Bithlo, Fla. (July 16, 2004) Rain surrounded Orlando SpeedWorld, thunder could be heard, but not one drop fell on Friday night. Only two FASCAR divisions ran as SpeedWorld prepared for the Regional Qualifier for the INEX Legends. But there was plenty of action on the track. Ronnie Roach had the pole for the 25 lap feature race for the Super Lates and quickly jumped to the lead over Ricky Wood, Jared Allison, Mike Hinegardner and Eric Deffendall. But on lap 1, Wood and Roach get together as Wood gives Roach alittle love kiss too hard and Roach goes around. Both cars were sent to the rear of the field turning the lead over to Jared Allison. Allison quickly took the point on the restart followed by Deffendall, Hinegardner, Ron Dicandio and Bobby Orr. Hinegardner puts the pedal down and passes Deffendall for second with Deffendall going to third. Then Dicandio passes Deffendall and takes over third as Deffendall settles into fourth. On lap 11, Bo Jackson brought out the yellow as he spun in turn 4. Jackson suffered a broken shifter and had to retire to the pits, done for the night. Allison takes the point on the restart but the yellow is thrown for a bad start realigning the field back up. Allison takes the point on the second restart followed by Hinegardner, Dicandio, Deffendall, Roach, Orr and Wood. Lap 12 the yellow is thrown again for Wood and Orr who have gotten together. Both are sent to the rear for the restart. Allison holds the point but on lap 14, Hinegardner is able to pass Allison and take over the lead with Dicandio coming along in second and Allison settling into third. Scott McKinley brings out the yellow on lap 15 as he spins in turn 3. Bobby Fleckinger makes a quick pit stop in the centerfield to get some sheet metal removed and both McKinley and Fleckinger join the field in the rear. Hinegardner takes the point on the restart but another bad start and the field is realigned. On the second start, Hinegardner leads the way followed by Dicandio, Roach, Allison, and Deffendall. On lap 16, Wood and Orr get together again in turns 1 and 2. Wood is black flagged for bringing out 3 cautions and Orr is pushed into the pits. On the restart, Dicandio passes Hinegardner and takes over the point followed by Hinegardner, Roach, Allison and Deffendall. But on lap 19, Hinegardner pushes alittle too hard and hits Dicandio in the rear spinning Dicandio out. Both cars are sent to the rear for the restart. New leader Ronnie Roach takes the point quickly on the restart followed by Allison, Deffendall, Fleckinger and Hinegardner. Roach takes the checkered followed by Jared Allison, Eric Deffendall, Bobby Fleckinger and Mike Hinegardner. Ronnie Roach and Ricky Wood won the heat races. Chad Ashley had the pole for the 15 lap Mini Stock feature and lead from green to checkered. Following Ashley on the green was Darren "Action" Jackson, Sean Bass, R.J. Arnone, and Dick Laszlo. Ashley and Jackson put on one heck of a show of some great side-by-side racing as Ashley would inch ahead and then Jackson would come right back. Josh Hermann, last week's winner, passed Laszlo taking over fifth with Laszlo going to sixth. On lap 5, Hermann goes off the track coming off 2 and into the grass but gets the car going right away without bringing out the yellow. Ashley continues leading the way but Sean Bass passes Jackson for second but Jackson comes right back and retakes second with Bass going back to third. Ashley takes the checkered followed by Darren Jackson, Sean Bass, R.J. Arnone and Dick Laszlo. Chad Ashley won the heat race. OFFICIAL RESULTS ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD - JULY 16 SUPER LATE MODEL
