Dempsey Big Winner at Columbia Motorsports Park
|
by Marty Little
LAKE CITY, Fla. - The Penske Racing Shocks United Pro Modifieds invaded Columbia Motorsports Park Saturday night and when the checkers flew it was veteran wheelman Dwayne Dempsey in victory lane following the 50 lap run.
Jimmy Britts, very familiar with the quick half-mile oval, paced the first nine circuits before journeyman Dempsey put his open wheeler on the point. Kevin Durden pressured Dempsey lap after lap but settled for runner-up honors when all was said and done.
Lee Collins collected third place money in front of Britts, John Gerstner and Kevyn Terry, with Alan Bruns, Alan McCafferty, Aric Almirola and Jerry Artuso rounding out the top 10 finishers.
Racin' Jason Garver grabbed the lead on the second lap and was first to the stripe in the 25 lap Street Stock main. Brad Fiene gave chase but settled for second over David Hart, Andy Kennedy and newcomer Junior Estes.
Caleb Mahler roared past Josh Bedenbaugh with two laps remaining to win the 12 lap Pure Stock run. John Oliver took second money with a fading Bedenbaugh third.
Tim Mahler, dad of Caleb, joined his son in the feature win department as he was victorious in the 12 lap Hornets headliner followed by Marvin Blankenship and Oliver.
The visiting TQ Late Model feature fell to Tony Carrigg ahead of Terry Dugger and Derrick Suits.
Following the previously announced revised summer schedule, the track will be closed this week (July 17) but come back strong on July 24 with the lightning fast, 700 horsepower winged sprint cars of the Tampa Bay Area Racing Assn. as the headliner.
