Hot Night at New Smyrna Speedway
|
by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (July 10, 2004) Warm night, no rain, all was well at New Smyrna Speedway as the Super Lates, Lates, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock, Strictly Stock and Thunder Roadsters put on a great show. The Strictly Stock rainout feature saw Richard Renzi on the pole for their 12 lap feature. Renzi quickly took the pole followed by Mike Wofford, Mike Dohm, Gordon Houck, and Bruce McGonigal Jr. McGonigal puts the pedal down and passes Houck for fourth and then passes Dohm for third. Wofford takes over the point with Renzi going to second. On lap 6, Muh spins in turns 3 and 4 but does not bring out the yellow as he gets going right away. On lap 7, McGonigal retakes the lead with Wofford in second followed by Renzi, Slade and Muh. On lap 10, Matt Crews spins but also continues not bringing out the yellow in turn 1. McGonigal takes the checkered followed by Wofford, Renzi, Muh and Slade. Wofford was disqualifed for not going to scales changing the results to Bruce McGonigal Jr., Richard Renzi, Bruce Muh, Derek Slade, and Mike Dohm. There may have been only four Thunder Roadsters but they put on a good show with Hutch Hudson taking the checkered followed by Jim Wade, Scott "Cornbread" Riodehalgh and Don Beardslee. Hutch Hudson took the heat win. Ben Cutler Jr. had the pole for the Mini Stock feature but it was Chad Carpenter who quickly took the point followed by Brian Bellaw, Cutler, Alli Owens, and Jamie Dixon. Carpenter brings out the yellow when he spins on the backstretch on lap 1 and is sent to the rear of the field for the restart. Bellaw takes over the point followed by Cutler, Owens, Ted Vulpius and Jamie Dixon. On lap 8, Vulpius gives Bellaw a little "love tap" but allows Bellaw to correct and not wreck the both of them. Vulpius continues looking high and low but Bellaw holds strong and safeguards the point. Vulpius and Bellaw go side-by-side, neither taking an inch or giving an inch. Bellaw takes the checkered by 2" over Vulpius followed by Ben Cutler Jr., Allie Owens, and Rex Christensen. Brian Bellaw took the heat win. Steve Redditt had the pole for the Sportsman feature and quickly took the point over Ron Lufcy, John Nusbaum, Mike Soukup and Cory Kaiser. But it does not take long for Lufcy to pass Redditt taking over the lead as Soukup passes Nusbaum and Kaiser follows Soukup with Nusbaum settling into fifth. Coming from the rear of the field is Dale Closuer who makes his way to fourth by lap 5. By lap 9 it is Lufcy, Clouser, Soukup, Kaiser and Nusbaum leading the way. Clouser goes high and takes the lead from Lufcy as Justin Newby makes his first appearance in the top five. Clouser takes the checkered followed by Ron Lufcy, Mike Soukup, Justin Newby, and Cory Kaiser. With only two Super Lates in the pits, the Super Late and Late Model feature was combined with David Rogers on the pole. Rogers quicly took the point followed by Jim "Hoot" Flynn. Josh Schmidt lead the field of Lates followed by Phillip Bessette, Troy Atkins, Robert Andercheck and Mark Smith. The yellow comes out on lap 2 for Troy Atkins and Robert Andercheck who have gotten together in turn 4. Both are sent to the rear of the field for the restart. Rogers leads fellow Super Late Model Flynn as Schmidt leads the Lates. On lap 3, Carl Goodwin brings out the yellow as he spins high in turns 3 and 4 as Gig Smith spins to avoid Goodwin. Goodwin rejoins the field in the rear. Rogers leads the way for Flynn as Schmidt leads the way for the Lates. On lap 5, Don Hess (who came from the rear of the field) passes Schmidt and takes over the lead followed by Schmidt, Bessette, Andercheck and Mark Smith. Lap 7 the yellow comes out for debris on the track. Andercheck is black flagged for leaking fluid on the track as Troy Atkins goes onto pit road with a fire underneath the hood and newcomer Gig Smith being checked also. Rogers holds the point over Flynn as Hess leads the way for Bessette, Schmidt, Mark Smith, and Carl Goodwin. Rogers takes the checkered over Flynn with Hess taking the checkered over Bessette, Schmidt, Mark Smith and Goodwin. In tech, Schmidt was disqualified for left side weight making the finishing order for the Late Models Don Hess, Phillip Bessette, Mark Smith, Carl Goodwin, and Gig Smith. Don Hess won the heat race. The heat seems to have gotten to the Super Stock drivers as they had one crazy feature. Jack Lenzen had the pole and quickly took the lead over Ron Whaley, Josh Wronkowski, Ted Head and John Castro. Castro passes Head for fourth as Jeff Colburn takes over the fifth place spot. For quite a few laps, Colburn tries everything to pass Castro but Castro is not to be shaken. But on lap 13, Colburn pushes alittle too hard as he spins himself out tapping Castro. Colburn rejoins the field in the rear. Lenzen holds the point on the restart followed by Whaley, Wronkowski, Head, and Castro. Colburn is coming back up on fire and pushes James Adams down the backstretch. Adams gets loose in turn 4 as he spins and hits the wall hard with Colburn hitting the inside pit road wall hard. Both drivers are shaken but able to get out of their cars. Lenzen takes the checkered followed by Ron Whaley, Josh Wronkowski, Ted Head and John Castro. Jack Lenzen took the heat win. The Strictly Stocks took their second feature of the night with Mike Dohm on the pole. Dohm quickly jumped to the point followed by Richard Renzi, Bruce Muh, Bruce McGonigal Jr., and Mike Wofford. Renzi puts the pedal down and takes over the lead as Dohm slides to second. But Dohm is not done as Muh passes Dohm with Dohm sliding back to fifth and McGonigal taking over third and Wofford in fourth. But Renzi is not destined to have the point as Muh takes over with McGonigal following Muh for second and Renzi in third. Muh and McGonigal are fighting hard with each spinning out but able to continue but turning the lead over to Mike Wofford. Wofford takes the checkered for his "first" feature win followed by Bruce Muh, Richard Renzi, Matt Crews and Mike Dohm. Richard Renzi and Bruce McGonigal Jr. took the heat wins.
