Southard Takes Win in Bronson Modifieds
|
By Rick Warren
It was a good night for racing as the weather was warm, the skies put on a spectacular show of lightening in the distance, and the fans were revved up. After heat races were run, and the fans were involved in a watermelon seed spitting contest at intermission, it was time for the feature races to be run.
The Open Wheel Modifieds lined up under threatening skies, and when the green flag waved to start the race, Gary Southard wasted no time driving his racer to the lead. As the race went on, Southard opened a comfortable lead, and wasnt seriously challenged the entire race. The race for second was another matter entirely. Chip Owen, Buddy Hughes and Gene Owen all had decided that second place looked pretty good at that point, and the three racers put on a great race as they battled one another for the spot. Most of the time you could cover all three cars with a tablecloth. As the checkered flag waved, with Southard in command of the race and claiming the win, Gene Owen had managed to drive by Hughes late in the race and grab second, with Hughes holding off Chip Owen for third spot.
The Sportsman Feature was a real barn burner. Kimbo Van Aernam, Scott Wilkerson, Phillip Rook, Arthur Conquest and Rob Cooper all were involved in the battle for the lead. Midway thru the race the action really heated up, with Conquest and Cooper making contact in turn 4, allowing Conquest to slip by Cooper. As the racers entered turn 1, the two again made contact, with Conquest spinning in turn 2.
The race restarted with Conquest back in second, and Cooper on the rear. Conquest managed to get to the front, but had several cars still challenging for the win. Meanwhile, Cooper was coming from the rear, a man on a mission. Cooper was able to drive by everyone except Conquest, as Arthur held on for the win, followedclosely by Cooper. Third went to David Christopher, who had a good run, in his return to racing. Phillip Rook had a good run to finish fourth, followed by Van Aernam.
Clint Foley once again drove to a convincing win in the Mini Stock Feature, followed by the always improving Ronnie Hicks. Third went to Jeff Barnes, Followed by Billy Smith and Morris Richardson.
The Pure Stock Feature had some exciting action as well, with a surprise ending. A.J. Northup took the lead early, and looked to have things going his way. A late caution allowed the field to close up, and at the restart Arnold Hughes went to work on Northup. As the cars raced toward the white flag, Hughes and Northup got together exiting turn 2, with both cars sliding thru the infield. The race restarted with Hughes and Northup both at the rear of the lead lap. Both cars took off like rockets on the restart, and managed to finish well despite the setback. Tommy Ausburn took full advantage of the situation, and pulled in his first feature win of this season. Second went to Mike Baker.
The figure 8 racers had a great race also. Seth Nistok was able to drive to a very popular win, with his competitors stopping by victory lane to offer congratulations. Second went to Ronnie Schreifels, with Robbie Powell taking third.
Ken Sheffield managed to hold off the challenge of Michael Holbrook to take the win in the V8 Bombers. Third went to Kevin Hodge.
