George Landis Tops Mod Lite Field - Rain KO's Legends at SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
After dodging Mother Nature for almost two nights, the weather finally moved in Saturday evening at Orlando Speedworld but all of the races were completed with the exception of the RE/MAX Legends Car feature.
The Pro Challenge cars and trucks were on the track and had completed eleven laps of their feature race when the skies opened up. Although the rain was not heavy, the lighting was very heavy and that forced track officials to stop the show.
Brad Sanders was leading the Pro Challenge race in front of his brother Rod Sanders and Ken Watts when the race was stopped. Drivers voted to call the race complete with Sanders getting the win. Howard Brennan rolled his car completely over in the Pro Challenge heat, but came back to take fourth with Bobby Robillard fifth.
Phil Krauthoff and George Landis led the way in the twin Modified Lite heats but Landis found himself in trouble as the green flew for the 25 lap feature as he and Mike Belusar tangled at the drop of the green. Landis was able to continue but Belusar was out before things actually got started.
The second start was much better as Doug Parlamento grabbed the early advantage. Krauthoff had his car dialed in to the low groove and he passed Parlamento for the lead on lap five. Meanwhile, Landis was working his way to the front after having to start from the rear after his green flag altercation.
Landis moved by Parlamento for second on lap thirteen and set his sights on the high-flying Krauthoff only to see the only caution flag of the race come out for a Zane Davis spin on lap 15.
Krauthoff continued to hold the point but Landis kept the pressure on, finally grabbing the lead with two laps to go. Landis zipped to the win followed by Krauthoff, Stan Hope, Parlamento and Nick Shadid.
Gerald White, Jr. dominated the Bandolero Bandits action winning both the heat and feature. Trailing White, Jr. in the 15 lap main event were Ryan Rust, Blake Eden, Donovan Ponder and Roger Benton, Jr. Brandon Thomson did likewise in the Bandolero Young Guns as he led the way in both events. Running behind Thomson in the feature were Matthew Jarrett, Scott Jarrett, and Chelsea Schillig.
Evan Russell won the Bandolero Outlaw heat and feature races as well as Kara Clarke took second in the feature for her best career finish. Dave Jarrett and Sam Gearhart were third and fourth.
After the Pro Challenge machines pulled off the track, the Hurricanes came out and actually ran their feature race in a light rain shower. William Hindman found the slick track to his liking as he drove his "Starsky and Hutch, Jr." Mustang to his first win of the year. Eric Smithers gave it a good run but had to settle for second in front of Jordan Caraway, Kenny Walker and Ben Craft.
Heat races for the RE/MAX Legends cars were won by Bobby Byars and Patrick Conrad. The feature race will be made up as part of the next Saturday program on July 10th.
