Conrad Back on Top of Legends at Orlando SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
After a week of vacation, Clermont's Patrick Conrad was back with a vengeance Saturday night at Orlando Speedworld as he dominated the RE/MAX Legends Car 25 lap main event.
Conrad and Wesley McLeod took the Legends heats with Conrad drawing a "0" for the inversion putting he and McLeod on the front row for the feature.
Conrad wasted little time building up a big lead as McLeod and Brandon Thomson were in a real dogfight for second. That race came to a head on lap nine as the two tangled in turn three bringing out the caution. Both were sent to the rear of the field for the restart. Conrad again pulled away on the restart with Darin "T-Bone" Coker now in second and running strong but unable to match Conrad's speed.
Thomson spun in turn four on lap 14 and was hit broadside by McLeod as the caution came out a second time. Neither driver was hurt but both machines were done for the night.
Conrad ran the remaining eleven green flag laps on a rail and took his tenth win of the year. Coker finished a strong second for his best career finish while Bobby Byars had his best finish of the year in third. James Rodriguez was fourth with rookie Derrick Wood equaling his best finish in fifth.
The visiting Classic Auto Racing Series 25 lap feature went to rookie Corey Freed of Orlando who took advantage of a spin by Daryl Grief, who was leading at the time.
Freed went on to score the victory over Bill Posey, Joey Strehle, Daryl Grief and Randy Grief.
Freed also won the heat while George Hall, Jr. took his first win in over two years in the Classic Car trophy dash.
Chad Akins held off the challenges of Gerald White, Jr. to win his third Bandolero Bandits feature of the year. White took second ahead of Ryan Rust, Donovan Ponder, Blake Eden and Roger Benton, Jr. who was driving his first race. Akins also won the heat.
Brandon Thomson scored a relatively easy victory in the highly competitive Bandolero Young Guns division, leading all the way after also winning the heat. Scott Jarrett came home second trailed by Derrick Wood, Chelsea Schillig and Matthew Jarrett.
Only two Bandolero Outlaws were in the field but they put on a great show for the fans as Evan Russell and Dave Jarrett swapped the lead back and forth several times before Russell took command with three laps to go taking his fourth win of the year over Jarrett.
Greg Bruce put his Ford Escort back in the winners circle at the end of the Hurricane feature holding off the challenges of Bobby Crites and his VW Rabbit. Brian Bleau was third followed by Sly Cawley and Ben Craft.
