WILD Double Points Night at New Smyrna
|
by Jane Smith Samsula, Fla. (May 29, 2004) Hot weather and a holiday weekend did not stop drivers from coming to New Smyrna Speedway for "DOUBLE" points. Even a few surprise visitors were instore for the racing fans. Super Lates saw Eric Black take the heat win but it was Dick "King of the Short Tracks" Anderson on the pole for their 20 lap feature. Anderson, who led from green to checkers. On the green, Anderson quickly jumped to the lead over David Rogers, B.J. McLeod, Eric Black and Guy Thomas. But it did not take long before it was the Anderson, Rogers, and McLeod show as they left the rest of the field - Black, Thomas and David Frohlich to battle among themselves. By lap 8, McLeod passed Rogers and had taken the second spot aiming his guns now towards Anderson. But by lap 12, it was McLeod and Rogers going side-by-side again for the second spot with Rogers taking over on lap 13. Lap 17 Scott Reeves brought out the yellow as he spun on the backstretch. On the restart it was Anderson, Rogers, McLeod, Black, Thomas, Frohlich, and Reeves. On the last lap going for the checkered, Thomas and Frohlich got alittle too hot and heavy touching and both spinning as Scott Reeves went on by and took fifth place at the checkered. Anderson took his first feature win at NSS for 2004 with David Rogers, B.J. McLeod, Eric Black and Scott Reeves in the top five. Watch several of these drivers as they race the Powell Memorial on Friday, June 4, at Citrus County Speedway. The Powell Memorial will be 150 laps, $5,000 to win. Sportsman saw Dale Clouser and Donny Williams take the heat wins. Donny Williams had the pole for the 15 lap feature but it did not take long for Dale Clouser to take the points from Williams. Following Closuer was Williams, Earl Beckner, Chris Peludat, and Cory Kaiser. On lap 14 the only caution of the race came out for Joe Gerard and John Nusbaum who got together in turns 3 and 4 and spun. The race went back green with Clouser taking the checkers followed by Donny Williams, Earl Beckner, Chris Peludat and Cory Kaiser. Clouser was protested after the race and a full teardown was done. Clouser was found illegal in the bottom end and the win was given to Donny Williams followed by new finishing order Earl Beckner, Chris Peludat, Cory Kaiser, and Ken Lewton. Brian Bellaw won the Mini Stock heat but it was Chad Carpenter on the pole for their 15 lap feature. But on lap 1, Carpenter, Ron Karto Jr., and Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulpius all got together in turn 4 as Carpenter spun and Karto ran over Vulpius avoiding Carpenter. All three retired to the pits for the night. The race was restarted again as Robbie Storer, Alli Owens, Brian Bellaw, Ron Dubeau, and Jamie Dixon were the top five. By lap five, Owens found herself going side-by-side with Brian Bellaw for the second spot with Bellaw taking it by lap 6 as Owens settled into fourth. Storer took the checkered followed by Brian Bellaw, Ron Dubeau, Alli Owens and Jamie Dixon. Brad May won the heat race for the Open Wheel Modifieds but it was Bobby Blake on the pole for their 15 lap feature. On the green, it was Blake and May going side-by-side for the point followed by Matt Wheeler, Max Mock and Ed Kuhel. The #7 of Mark Vandevender had problems and had to retire from the race. Blake took the lead and it was May doing everything he could to pass Blake. On the last lap, Blake and May came upon Kuhel, who was running fifth, with Blake having to check up and May passing for the point. May took the win followed by Blake, Matt Wheeler, Max Mock, and Ed Kuhel. After the race, Blake hit the back-end of Kuhel twice showing his disgust with Kuhel. Kuhel ended up with a large amount of rear-end damage and not very happy since nothing was done on purpose to make Blake loose the lead. And by the way, the moon was kindof full. Jeff Colburn and Mark Smith won the heat races for the Late Models. But in the first heat, three cars were destroyed before they could even run the feature. Chuck Burkhalter, Chuck Abell, and Troy Atkins. Atkins was leading the heat with Burkhalter going on his outside to pass for the lead when Atkins moved up the track and pushed Burkhalter straight into the turn 1 wall. Chuck Abell, who was behind Atkins and Burkhalter, had no place to go and went into them destroying his new car. Atkins complained of a headache after the EMT's were called in. Phillip Bessette had the pole for the 15 lap Late Model feature and found himself going side-by-side with Jeff Colburn for the lead on the green followed by Mark Smith, Don Hess, and Dewayne Barrus.
Colburn manages to take the point as Bessette slides to third and Don Hess takes over second when on lap 2, Colburn spins on the backstretch in front of the whole field charging down on him. Luckily everyone was able to miss Colburn and he rejoined the field in the rear. On the restart, it was Don Hess, Bessette, Smith, Chad Pierce, and Dwayne Barrus. Pierce passes Smith then Bessette taking over second and trying to catch Hess for first. But Hess is strong and Pierce remains second followed by Smith, Bessette, Colburn, and Barrus. On lap 13, Colburn makes his move on Bessette to take over fourth as Bessette spins and brings out the caution flag in turns 1 and 2. The race goes back green for two more laps as Hess takes the checkered followed by Chad Pierce, Mark Smith, Jeff Colburn, and Josh Schmidt. Ron Whaley won the heat race for the Super Stocks but on the pole for their 15 lap feature was Jeff Colburn driving the #23 of Charlie Collins. But it was Josh Wronkowski who took the lead on the green followed by Colburn, James Adams, Barry Parks and Ron Whaley. Colburn passes Wronkowski for the lead as Whaley passes Adams and takes over third with Adams sliding to fourth and Stephen Dembinsky in fifth.
On lap 7, Dembinsky spins in turns 3 and 4 bringing out the yellow. Whaley holds the point on the restart followed by Colburn, Wronkowski, Adams, and Barry Parks. Colburn's car seems to slow as Adams passes Colburn for third. Whaley takes the checkered followed by Josh Wronkowski, James Adams, Jeff Colburn, and Barry Parks. Richard Renzi took the heat race with John Poltz on the pole for their 12 lap feature. But it was Curtis Smith who took the lead and led to the checkered followed by Bruce Muh, John Poltz, Richard Renzi and Derek Slade.
