Wood Ups Points Lead in SLM - Lemmerman Gets First Win at SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
Orlando's Ricky Wood took advantage of a mix-up at the start of Friday night's 25-lap Super Late Model feature and led every lap on his way to his third win of the year at Orlando Speedworld. Polesitter B.J. McLeod brought the field down to the green flag, but as he attempted to shift his mount into third gear, the transmission broke and McLeod's car slowed suddenly. Third starting Ronnie Roach had nowhere to go and crashed into McLeod's machine sending both cars spinning.
McLeod's car was pushed to the infield while Roach made repairs in the pits and made it out for the restart.
Wood found himself on the pole and took advantage of the situation, leading all the way despite a couple of yellow flag periods that allowed the field to catch up to him. Wood was clearly faster and he took a relatively easy win which boosted his overall point lead in the class over Jared Allison who finished second just in front of hard charging Mike Hinegardner.
Patrick Conrad battled back from early race problems to take fourth while Roach came all the way from the rear of the grid after his pit stop to take fifth.
Bobby Fleckinger, Aaron Dreher, Rich Bates, Russ Shaw and Scott McKinley rounded out the top ten. Allison and Roach won the heats.
Hoot Flynn dominated the Modified action, leading all the way and winning by a comfortable margin for his second trip to victory lane in 2004. Trailing Flynn were Skip Honaker, Mark Emberson, Matt Wheeler and Ricky Wood. Flynn also won the heat.
A big field of Mini Stocks couldn't stop Chad Ashley as he claimed his second win of the season. Four time winner Sean Bass had a hard trip into the wall early in the race while trying to work his way through the field but thankfully was not hurt.
Following Ashley across the finish line were Robbie Storer (who started last in the 17 car field), R.J. Arnone, Rex "Boneman" Hollinger, and Dick Laszlo.
The Sportsman field was a wild one and saw a first time winner in Spencer Lemmerman.
The craziest incident occurred just after John Hodge took the lead driving his brand new machine only to have the steering wheel come of in his hands going into turn three. The incident also damaged the cars of Korey Kaiser and heat race winner Richard Hight who both tried to continue but were forced to drop out.
Lemmerman took over the lead at this point and held off a late charge from Jeff Wright to claim the victory. Justin Hall was third followed by Bruce Gayton and Mike Carr.
Ted Head inherited the Super Stock feature win after apparent winner Corey Freed didn't pass tech. John Castro was a close second over Bob Beiler, John Bennett and Bill Loomis.
Richie Laszlo again topped the Stictly Stock Class in a trophy dash over Bobby Crites.
