Winchell Again in Charlotte County Speedway Late Models
|
By CLAUDE LEWIS
Cool and calm seems to be the way to go in 100-lap Limited Late Model races at Charlotte Speedway.
While others wrecked each other, spun out and broke down, Joe Winchell waited his turn and then walked through the door to victory in Saturday nights main event at the Punta Gorda paved oval.
Winchell becomes the first driver to claim a second victory in this years 100-lap series. There have been four races so far. Winchell won the first one in January. Wayne Morris won in February and Mike Hovis in March.
Morris finished second Saturday night, Mike Franklin was third, Frank Welch fourth and Bobby Shelton fifth. Cape Coral teen-ager Cory Collum just missed out on a top five, settling for sixth in the 24-car field.
Winchell, who hails from Davie, started outside of polesitter Joe Sumasky, who led the first 76 laps. The volatile driver out of Lehigh Acres experienced bad luck when a tire went down on his red No. 2 car, allowing Winchell, Morris and Franklin to get by.
Sumasky intentionally spun his car to bring out a caution flag one of 15 in the race. He didnt get away with it, however, as he was black flagged.
That left Winchell, Morris and Franklin in a three-car chase to the checkered. Neither Morris or Franklin had anything for the No. 57 car.
The early part of the race saw Steve Arnold pressure Sumasky. The No. 19 and No. 2 cars bumped a few times. Arnold, the defending Limited Late champ at CCS, saw his night end on lap 38 after a spin.
Franklin recorded fast time in lap qualifying but drew the 10th starting position pill. He maneuvered the No. 12 car up with the front-runners by 30 laps.
Local fan favorite Randy Fox was out by lap 29.
Travis Wilson, a 20-year-old out of Bartow who is the son of former NASCAR Winston Cup driver Rick Wilson, only made it 31 laps before running into trouble. He was moving up towards the front when he wrecked.
Punta Gorda's Jason Kuykendall was putting together a solid run in the Obees 99 car before be was hit by Glenn Morris.
There were six other divisions racing Saturday night at Charlotte County Speedway.
Jeremy Goddard of Naples passed John Garrett on lap 14 and went on to take checkers in the 25-lap Sportsman race. James DuBose of Arcadia was second and Dale Dean III was third.
Defending Super Stock champ Danny Caylor made a rare appearance and proved he still has what it takes, winning the 25-lap feature ahead of Mike Lebeau and John Hanuschik.
Chris Huntoon of Englewood won the Road Warrior 25-lapper. He was side-by-side with Bob Waltz on lap 15 when the No. 5 car of Waltz lost an engine. From there, the No., 30 car sped away from the field. Del Beckner of Naples was second. Shane Leonard was third in the 17-car field.
The Thunder Truck finish was exactly the same as the previous week Garrett followed by Cheryl Weaver and Bob Charette.
In 4-Cylinders, Punta Gordas Robert Benning won his first feature race. He passed Shawn Bates on lap 7 and was never headed. Bates, who hails from Arcadia, was third. In between was Chris Loney from Naples.
The Three Quarter Midgets enjoyed a 20-lap feature on the 3/8-mile oval. Brandon Cagle of Citrus Hill was first. It was his third win of the year. Jack Duffy ran second and Paul Huffstutler was third.
The night ended in a circus-like atmosphere with a Boat Race.
