Lloyd wins Corteco's NLMS feature at Volusia
|
by Steve Howell DELAND, Fla. -- Under a full-moon, two-time NLMS Champion Ivedent Lloyd Jr. picked up the win in the 100 lap feature here on Saturday night. The race, which is normally the Raceweeks opener, had been rescheduled do to rain back in February, was raced this past weekend. Daytona, which was filled with the Annual Bikeweek crowd, as some made their way to Volusia Speedway to watch over forty-NLMS take a shot at making the twenty-six car field.
With Jameson Inn Qualifying on Friday night, Ms. Lynn Roy of Jameson Inn would wave the green flag on the first car Brain Turner to get qualifying under way. With forty-six cars taking time it would be Bert’s Transmission Rookie of the Year candidate Chesley Dixon taking the quick time to claim the pole-position for the first of four heat races. Dixon would then take the win in the first heat to start the 100-lap feature on the front row.
With the green waiving for the feature Saturday evening, Dixon would jump to the lead with Deland Fla’s Mike Eubanks taking the second position. The caution would wave at lap 6 when Steve Lade would make contact with the turn 1 wall, bringing out a double-file restart.
As the race went back to green Patrick Sheltra would get turned around coming out of turn four with the cars of Paul George, Cale Simons, Terry Lumley, Bill Littell, Sheltra, involved, and as that was happening Scott Singler would get into the Eubanks car, putting Eubanks against the front straight away wall, collecting the cars of Bobby Padgett, Lawton Minchew, Eubanks, and Henry Carter.
“That was a bad deal, the track just got blocked and we had no where to go, we were having one of our best runs, the car was good and now it’s junk” said a disappointed Cale Simons. The Simons car had rolled over the top of the George car with sever damage to both mounts, fortunately ever driver was ok. Lumley, Carter, Minchew an Eubanks would be able to continue, however their machines would have extensive damage, ending their chances for a feature win.
Dixon would restart the race now with two-time NLMS Champion on his rear. Henry Carter who had been the accident earlier had worked his way back to the front and began to put pressure on Lloyd for the second position. However Carter would suddenly slow as his mount began mechanical problems.
Chesley Dixon would have a three to four car length lead over Lloyd up to lap 48, when the caution would wave for the Singler car.
When the green waived Ivedent would jump to the inside Dixon, the to would run side-by-side with Ivedent pulling a car length ahead of Dixon for the top-spot.
One of the best races of the evening was that of John Rankin from Ocala Fla, and Mike Eubanks as the two would battle door-to door for several laps around the speedway with Rankin finally getting the spot and then finishing in the fourth position behind the car of Billy Lyles. Ivednet would lead the final laps as Dixon could close but was not able to get to the leader.
The Corteco NLMS will be off the next couple of weeks before they travel to Alabama, with Penton Raceway and East Ala. Speedway playing host to the Series.
