PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (March 6) - Arcadia's Raymond "Superfrog" Jones hopped his way to the winner's circle in Saturday night's 25-lap feature for Outlaw Modifieds at Charlotte County Speedway.
Jones, the defending series points champ, was strictly a stock car racer up until a few years ago when Arcadia car builder Dave Osteen talked him into giving the 4-cylinder open wheel cars a try.
It didn't take Jones long to catch on.
Billy Campbell was the early leader Saturday night but started his way back when Ted Hoversen passed him on lap 8. Jones hopped around Doug Hopper and into second place on lap 12. Then Jones challenged Hoversen on lap 16, taking over the point.
It was a fight to the finish, but Jones held off Ted Hoversen, who settled for second. His son, Lance Hoversen, was a close third.
Charlotte County Speedway's Sportsman division went 50 laps Saturday night. John Garrett of North Fort Myers crossed the finish line first in the yellow No. 74 car, but he was disqualified in post race technical inspection because of illegal distributor.
Garrett at least got some consolation later in the night when he won the 25-lap Thunder Trucks feature. He gave away his trophy to a young fan.
Back to Sportsman. George Ellsworth originally crossed the finish line second, but with Garrett's DQ bumped up to first. Defending Super Stock champion Danny Caylor was second in his first race up in Sportsman. Punta Gorda's Jerry Bryant was third.
Garrett won by a comfortable margin in Thunder Trucks. Cheryl Weaver of Port Charlotte was second, far ahead of third-place Mike Bialecki, also of Port Charlotte.
The Super Stock 25-lapper was an entertaining affair, as it came down to the final laps. John Hanuschik kept the point throughout, but he survived some three-wide thrills. Arcadia's Elbert Butts also had his moments, but he settled for third. Charles Parsons was second.
The Road Warrior 25-lapper went to Englewood's Chris Huntoon. Jesse Gargus was second and Jonathan Abraham took third in the 20-car field.
The 4-Cylinder race belonged to Cody Benoit of Fort Myers. Chris Loney of Naples was second.
