Jefferson Wins Open Wheel Modifieds at Charlotte County Speedway
|
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (Feb. 1) - John Garrett used a slick move on the final lap to dive under James Dubose and win the 25-lap Sportsman feature Sunday at Charlotte County Speedway.
Garrett chased the No. 67 car of Dubose the entire race. It appeared the North Fort Myers resident would have to settle for a second-place finish. But coming out of turn four on the final lap, Garrett ducked underneath Dubose and was able to win by half a car length.
I made a mistake and got too high coming out of four, said Dubose, who hails from Arcadia. You cant make a mistake like that with a good driver like John behind you.
L.B. Skaggs finished third.
In Open Wheel Modifieds, Wayne Jefferson made it two straight victories in Chet Senokonoffs No. 61 car. Mike Hinegardner, a Sunshine Speedway regular, finished second. Double-dipping Skaggs was third in the 25-lapper.
Another driver won his second straight feature. Brian Richardson made it two in a row in Super Stocks. Richardson was able to hold off Venices Jeff Firestine, who put pressure on the North Fort Myers driver the entire race. John Hanuschik took third in the 25-lapper.
Port Charlottes Mike Bialecki got in front early and was able to capture the 25-lap Thunder Trucks feature. It was certainly good advertisement for his No. 8 Chevy truck, which is up for sale. Meanwhile, Garrett and Port Charlottes Cheryl Weaver battled for second. Garrett was able to grab the spot.
Road Warrior was a familiar tune with Bob Waltz and Chris Huntoon battling for the lead. Waltz was able to climb through lapped traffic and claim the victory. Huntoon took second. Mike Nelson of Cape Coral recorded his first top three finish in the No. 17 car.
The 4-Cylinder division held its junior and open races. In the junior eight-lapper, Cody Benoit won by a country straightaway over brother Dan. The two hail from Fort Myers. Chris Loney of Naples was third. In the open division, Jason Wilburn ran down Walter Forbes to win the eight-lapper. Forbes, who lives in Punta Gorda, was second. Ben Byrd, a 63-year-old from Clewiston, finished third.
The racing card on Sunday, Feb. 8, will include a return appearance by the School Bus Figure 8s.
