HIALEAH, Fla. - Charlie Coyle led wire to wire in winning the season ending 50 lap limited late model feature Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway. Gary Padula and Danny Maddox, locked in battle for the point championship, finished second and third respectively with Maddox the 2003 division titleist. Steve Weaver, Jr and Gary McGoron rounded out the top five finishers.
The street stock 25 lap run turned into a crashfest but when all was said and done and the smoke cleared it was Travis McCoy in victory lane with his familiar No. 1. T.C. McElyea appeared headed for victory only to be taken out by a new driver who was being lapped.
Early leader Greg Gorniak avoided all the mayhem to claim runner-up money over new division champion Sean Bulaskas, Tony Barreca and Ken Ammerman. The mini stocks ran with the street stocks due to short car count with Bill Calder the best of the four cylinder group.
Easily the best race of the evening was the jam packed 34 car cyclone headliner. Mark Shoedinger built a huge lead but saw his advantage wane as a pair of youngsters, David Dielmann and Timmy Ryan duked it out on the final lap with Dielmann the victor by a mere six inches at the line. Rookie Donald Economy claimed third money ahead of Shoedinger and Chris Stockton.
A special non-winners 10 lap event for the cyclones fell to rookie Ron Lunsford with a good drive over Ray Moreno and Stephen Kahleel. Eddie Lawler bested Bob Regula and Stockton in figure 8 action.
Despite rumors to the contrary, the historic Miami-area oval will open for its 50th consecutive season of stock car action on January 17, 2004 with an awards picnic at the track the week prior to honor 2003 champions.
