Danny Maddox Wins Limited Late Model Feature at Hialeah
by Marty Little
HIALEAH, Fla. - Veteran Danny Maddox jumped to the lead from the outside of the front row on the initial green flag and paced all 25 laps to win the limited late model feature event Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.
While the victory was only the second of the season for Maddox it did move him into the point lead by 36 points over Gary Padula with only one more point night on the calendar. In a wild shuffle coming for the checkers, David Weaver gained the runner up spot over rookie Sean Bulaskas with Mike Kohut and the slowing Padula fourth and fifth respectively.
Driving a borrowed car that he'd help set up, Charlie Coyle turned in a good drive for a wire to wire score in the 25 lap street stock finale. Tony Barreca hustled his No. 51 to second place money ahead of T.C. McElyea, the new car of Tom Daly and points leader Bulaskas. Tommy Styer made it feature win number three on the season as he topped the mini stocks in his highly modified Ford. Fred Williams gave Styer a mirror full of challenge for most of the event but settled for runner-up honors ahead of Greg Kaouk, Dave Shull and William McCarthy.
Cyclone action saw 33 cars take the green flag for the Nasty 100 and it was enduro graduate Eddie Lawler who led 96 laps to score in the centrury grind, his second win this season. At times Lawler enjoyed a large margin but at the end it was former division champion Roger Bohannon who made a run but came up a bit short to finish second. John Pettit was a very competitive third ahead of David Dielmann and Timmy Ryan.
The special 10 lap school bus figure 8 went to Dan Marino over McElyea and Jake Reedy.
On tap this week is the 33rd running of the Marion Edward Jr Memorial 100 for super late models with an outstanding field of locals and visitors expected to challenge for the large purse.
