Ray Wheeler Wins Again at Columbia
by Marty Little

LAKE CITY, Fla. - New late model champion Ray Wheeler notched another victory on the final night of the regular season Saturday night at Columbia Motorsports Park.

David Hodges, Jr paced the first five rounds of the 25 lap headliner but mechanical problems sent him to the pits as Wheeler roared to the lead and never looked back. Kevin Dicks gave chase but settled for second ahead of Bubba Norton, Al Beckelheimer, Jr and Al Berry.

The dirt late models ran a special 12 lap dash with Dusty Cone a wire to wire victor over Lonnie Roberts and Nevin Gainey.

Florida modified action saw former champion J.F. McClellan pace every one of the 25 laps on the half-mile oval. Jason Garver's second place finish assured him of the 2003 crown for the open wheelers as Greg Nordstrom, Charles Seroki and Dale Mosley rounded out the top five finishers.

The accident marred 25 lap street stock main saw David Hart lead early but it was Garver who got out front on lap four and drove it home for the victory over Jeff Prescott, Bryan Wheeler, new champ Brad Fiene and Georgia visitor Myron Chastain.

Marty Wood topped all challengers to win the 20 lap pure stock feature. New champion Russell Patterson checkered second over John Roling, Ronnie Cook and Jason Parker.

Other winners included Buck Headman in the Hornets, Derek Suits in the visiting TQ late models and Yvonne Parker in the ladies Poweder Puff.

The next scheduled event at the track is the season-ending Florida Pro Series Suwannee 200 super late model event set for November 30.
