BY Claude Lewis
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (Oct. 11) Charlotte County Speedway showcased its Road Warrior division on Saturday night with a 50-lapper.
Bob Waltz of Cape Coral had his No. 5 car humming and took the checkered flag well ahead of the pack. Chris Huntoon of Englewood came on late for second. Phil Oncken of Fort Myers was third.
Seven racing divisions were scheduled. Due to numerous crashes in the Sportsman division and a bad one in Super Stock, only four divisions were able to race.
The most serious mishap came on lap 22 of the 25-lap Super Stock feature. The race was just going green and Terry Price and Greg Anderson were coming out of turn four fighting for fifth place. The cars locked together and barreled straight into the front straightaway wall.
Both drivers were injured and their cars heavily damaged.
Price, a 35-year-old out of Port Charlotte, was hurt the worst. Emergency workers had to cut off the roof of his car so he could be removed and flown via helicopter to Lee Memorial Hospital. At the time, Price had numbness in his legs. He was taken to Fort Myers because of a possible spine injury.
Thankfully, Price was released at 5:30 a.m. and allowed to go home.
Danny Caylor of Lehigh Acres ended up winning the race. George Tanner of Cape Coral was second and Mike LeBeau of Port Charlotte took third.
The Sportsman feature was also a wreck to behold. It took the cars 35 minutes to run the first 11 laps of their race. By the time the checkered flag fell, there were 13 cautions. It took an hour for the race to finish.
Coming down the front straightaway as the checkered flag fell was Phil Johnson out of Naples. John Garrett of North Fort Myers raced hard for second. Johnny Allen of Lehigh Acres took third.
The TQ Midgets were the guest division, putting on a great show over 20 laps. Jack Duffy grabbed the top spot followed by Brandon Cagle and Eric Anderson.
The three divisions that didnt get in their features Limited Late Models, Thunder Trucks and 4-Cylinders will race double features this coming Saturday, Oct. 19. Admission is just $9.
