Kevin Durden Given UPM Win at Columbia
by Marty Little

LAKE CITY, Fla. - Veteran Kevin Durden didn't lead a single lap but ended up the victor in Saturday night's United Promoter's Modified series 50 lap open wheel feature at Columbia Motorsports Park.

Jimmy Britts was the early leader before Brian Campbell took command on the sixth circuit. A yellow flag on lap 29 closed up the field and shortly after the green flag waved again Larry Martin took second from Britts. One lap later Britts and Martin tangled with the latter and fast qualifier Dwayne Dempsey also involved. When the smoke cleared Martin and Dempsey were finished for the evening and Britts was sent to the rear of the field but he elected to park his car rather than continue. Durden chased Campbell to the strip with Jeremy Gerstner third. In post-race inspection Campbell had problems with his shock absorbers and forfeited the win to Durden. Gerstner was second ahead of Mike Johnson and Mike Bennett. The second five consisted of Greg Nordstrom, Charles Seroki, John Gerstner, Mike Wilson, Chris Fadling and Dale Mosley.

Street stock action found Jason Garver a convincing victor from the pole position. Second money in the 25 lapper went to Brad Fiene ahead of Will Jerkins, Kelly Barber and Wesley Keller.

John Roling topped the 20 lapper for the pure stocks in front of Russell Patterson, Kent Lovett, Heath Walker and Mark Nichols.
