By Rick Anges Bradenton, Fl. Mother Nature washed out qualifying for the Limited Late Model 100-lap feature event. It was almost a wash for the whole evening but one track owner John Sarrpriacone and his dedicated track crew pulled it off one more time and a full night of racing action ensued.
Limited Late Models
It's been a long time since Bobby Beauchemin has raced at the high banks of DeSoto Super Speedway. Beauchemin has won several championships around the state and is always a force to be reckoned with.
It didn’t take long after the drop of the green for him take to the lead. Several drivers made stabs at the lead but Beauchemin the wily veteran held his line, conserved his tires and held off the charge of second place Tate Pierce, a strong run in third went to Glenn Morris, fourth went to Jeff Wogoman who the "King of the Short Tracks" Dickie Anderson in his pits earlier in the day and rounding out the top five was the Mulberry "Flash" himself Wayne Morris.
There were some tense moments as on the last lap points leader Doug Moff went head on into the turn four wall with a sickening thud. Moff's wild ride was apparently caused by contact from Joe Sumansky which sent him to the concrete wall. Moff was taken to a nearby hospital and although sore checked out ok. Sumansky meanwhile was Dqed from the race and fined $1,000 for the altercation.
Figure 8
Just hours earlier the infield looked like Lake DeSoto but the track dried enough to bring out the "run what you brung" Figure 8 racers. There were cars from all different classes, Cowboy Caddies, Street Stocks, Enduro and even a mini-stock. But the strangest looking machines were the Pro-Figure 8 cars. The Pro cars dominated the race but the race was still exciting with the crowd on their feet with the close misses at the middle. When the smoke cleared it was Ethan Nistok who took the $1,000 prize and the checkers, second went to Gordon Brown, third was John Lavalle, fourth went to Tim Miller Jr. and fifth was Thomas Morgan.
