Warm Night, Hot Action at New Smyrna Speedway on April 19
by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (April 19, 2003) - Twas the night before Easter and a good crowd came to New Smyrna Speedway for some old fashion short track racing and demo derby.
During intermission, the children were given a chance at a drawing for a $50.00 gift certificate from Country Kitchens Family Restaurant, one of the sponsors on Tim "Missileman" McPhail's Mini Stock. Country Kitchens Family Restaurant is lcoated at 741 North U.S. 1 in Oak Hill, Florida and specializes in good home cooked food. Watch for more giveaways at New Smyrna Speedway from Country Kitchens.
Mike Amato had the pole for the Super Stock feature but it was Jeff Colburn who jumped to the early lead. The race saw a yellow when Amato spun coming off turn 4 on lap 1.. The field was realigned for a restart.with Colburn once again taking the lead on the green followed by Ted Head, Ron Whaley, Rich Clouser and Bob Trombley..
As the crowd was watching Ted Head and Ron Whaley go side-by-side on lap 4, suddenly Bob Trombley hits the wall in turns 3 and 4 and his tire goes sailing down into the inside track. Trombley was towed to the pits and done for the night.
Colburn holds the lead on the restart but coming up fast was Ron Whaley who took the point on lap 5 putting Colburn second followed by Ted Head, Rich Clouser, and Mike Amato. Lap 8, Rich Clouser goes up in smoke and slowly goes into the back pit entrance with the yellow coming out on lap 9 for fluids on the track.
The track is cleaned with Whaley taking the lead and the win followed by Jeff Colburn, Mike Amato,h Wronkowski, and Jason Foster.

On the restart, Vandevender holds the point with Bobby Blake in the number two spot. Vandevender and Blake touch slightly causing Vandevender to spin bringing out the yellow. Both restarted in the rear of the pack.
This turned the lead over to Justin Henderson who had David Castello on his heels. Castello and Henderson touch on lap 9 sending Henderson into the turn one wall. Henderson's car suffered rear-end damage but was still raceable as he and Costello joined the group in the rear of the pack.
Bobby Blake now had the point in the restart with Alan Bruns in second. Henderson moves into the third place position moving Bruns back to fifth with Castello coming up fast. Bruns brought out the yellow on lap 12 when he spun on the backstretch.

On the restart, Bill Spade took the point followed by Chris Pedulat, Ron Lufcy, Bill Love and Donnie Williams. Up until lap 12, it was a real chase to see who could overtake Spade. With no cautions, it was the Rogers, B.J. McLeod, Wayne Parker, Guy Thomas, Bruce Gowland, and Brent Hobbs night. In Winner's Circle, it was announced that it was David Roger's birthday and also one of the fans in the stands. Rogers graciously walked over to the stands and gave the trophy to the other Birthday person. A good night for both.
B.J. McLeod took the heat win for the Super Lates.
Mini Stocks were short in count but not short in action. Tim "Missileman" McPhail sat on the pole in his brand new "Missile" and lead from green to checkers. The only caution came in lap 3 when Ben Hutto lost his engine and went up into a stream of smoke.

No cautions were thrown in this race which saw Brian Bellaw's Jolly Roger's/Blackies Saloon Chevy chase Osteen for the lead but just could not quite catch him.
