IT'S TIME TO RACE!!

Mike Johnson Wins UPM at Columbia Motorsports Park
by Marty Little]

LAKE CITY, Fla. - Mike Johnson took advantage of his up front starting position and avoided a first lap crash to lead all 50 laps in winning the United Promoters Modified tour event Saturday night at Columbia Motorsports Park.

Johnson and Larry Martin paced the 19 car field to the green flag only to see eight cars in the middle of the field tangle prior to the flagstand as the red flag quickly flew. Five of the eight cars were unable to return for the race but fast qualifier Bryan Campbell was able to make repairs and join the run.

When the green waved again it was all Johnson as he quickly distanced himself from his nearest challengers. Gary Southard worked his way to second spot by the mid way point and filled Martin's mirror but was never able to mount a serious challenge and the lead duo crossed the stripe in that order. Kelly Lawrence nailed down third spot over Campbell and David Baxley.

Josh Byrd won his second 20 lap late model feature in as many weeks as outran Doyle Boatwright, Jay Middleton, Michael Faulk and Ray Wheeler.

Not to be denied, Wheeler came roaring back and copped the 25 lap street stock headliner with a good drive over Tim Conrad, Jeff Prescott, Dave Barber, Jr and Will Jerkins.

After being so close on several occasions, John Roling finally scored a win in the 20 lap pure stock main. Russell Patterson gave chase but settled for second place honors over Trish Taylor, Ronnie Cook and Aaron Smith.
